Monoecious, resinous, evergreen trees; leaves needle-like, or flat-linear, green above, in fascicles or spirally arranged; ovules 2 on the upper side, near base of the young female sporophyll, the female sporophyll subtended by a bract; at maturity the female sporophylls, bracts and axis all forming a woody cone that in dry weather opens and releases the winged seeds The pine family is our most important lumber family, and its resinous sap is the source of rosin tar, turpentine and many essential oils.
