1. T. distichum (L. ) Richard, * BALD C., SWAMP C. Large tree, to 40 m or more tall, to 4 m in diam. Bark thin, about l cm, gray-brown, rough. Leaves light green, flat-linear, 1-1.5 cm long, distichous, on slender twigs 5-12 cm long. Male cones about 2 mm in diam., in slender drooping panicles, nearly full grown in summer preceding their opening, very conspicuous in winter, shedding pollen March-April; pollen simple; female cones nearly spherical ca. 2 cm in diam., shedding seeds in Oct. (n=11) Swamps; cp. [Va., Ga., Fla., Ala., Miss. Tenn., Ky:].

2. T. ascendens Brongn.,* POND C. Tree somewhat smaller than T. distichum and much less abundant. Bark on old plants coarsely ridged, red-brown, thicker than in no. 1, to 2.5 cm thick, soft, shreddy. Leaves needle-like and except on seedlings and fast growing shoots are not distichous, but generally pressed against the twig. Cones similar to no. 1. Bays, pocosins and ponds; cp. [Ga., Fla.] T. distichum (L.) Richard--F. in part.
