Evergreen shrubs or trees, mostly destitute of resin, the buds scaly. Leaves distichously spreading: blades narrow, entire. Staminate ament mostly few-flowered, with scaly involucres. Ovulate ament most 1-flowered, the carpellary scale wanting. Cone baccate or drupaceous, wholly or partially enclosed by a pulpy cup-like aril. - About 12 genera, widely distributed. Many kinds are used in ornamental horticulture.
