One of BOTNET's primary functions is to provide access to information about theUNC Herbarium specimens for remote usage and viewing. Initially, as related in the BOTNET Welcome pages, we have begun with the Gymnosperms of the Southeastern US. One way the specimens can be selected is by browsing the the taxa by scientific names or common names. In this initial selection of Gymnosperms, the perspectives from several botanical floras and references was compiled to generate the list of included taxa.
Specimens can also be selected by using the plant identification tools to key out the plants according to four main resources of southeastern plants, the Manual of the Flora of the Southeastern United States, the Manual of the Flora of the Carolinas, the Vascular Flora of the Southeastern United States, and the Flora of the Carolinas and Virginia. We gratefully acknowledge the copyright permission granted by the UNC Press for usage of the sections of the Manual of the Flora of the Southeastern United States and the Manual of the Flora of the Carolinas, as well as the permission granted by Dr. James Hardin for use of his unpublished material on the Gymnosperms of the Vascular Flora of the Southeastern United States and Mr. Alan Weakley for usage of the material from the Flora of the Carolinas and Virginia. We have also provided links to the Gymnosperm section of the Flora of North America, provided through the Internet by the Flora of North America Project at the Missouri Botanical Garden.
We are completing a database of the Gymnosperms, which will ultimately include all subsequent entries of UNC Herbarium specimens as the BOTNET information collection grows. We also hope that interaction with the UNC specimens will be enhanced by the addition of a Classified Glossary to help understand plant characteristics and terms. The glossary is drawn from Chapter 6 of the Vascular Plant Systematics, an out of print reference text still used by those fortunate to have copies.
The specimen images available for viewing on this website were captured by a high-speed digital camera, the ProgRes 3012, made by a division of Zeiss Corporation; supplied and supported by Cox and Associates of Greensboro, NC. The captured images were enhanced by Adobe Photoshop imaging software. The procedure was developed over about six months of trial and error.
Individual images can certainly be downloaded and used for additional research purposes. We are also initiating an on-request (within a reasonable time frame) image service for UNC herbarium specimen images not included within this collection of images. Details of this service will be forthcoming; this will be an experimental service which we hope to continually improve.>
