Nora the Nonapus, a book written and illustrated by four 5th graders in 2004-05 was turned into an opera performed on the UNC campus by the Longleaf Opera Company. The book, written and illustrated by Susan Cavender, Zoe Gan, Vaishnavi Krishnan and Alison Smith, won a Scholastic book contest.

The Glenwood Gator Show Choir once again achieved a Superior rating at the Show Choir Festival at Carowinds, where they earned the honor of Overall Winner for the 11th consecutive year. The Show Choir Festival included elementary, middle and high school show choirs competing from North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee. Dr. Carole Christoff Dolber is the Gator Show Choir director and Annette Layman is the choreographer.

The Forensics Team at East Chapel Hill High School won the National Forensic League (NFL) district tournament. The NFL is the most competitive in-state tournament of the year and determines which students will represent the eastern half of the state at the national tournament. The UNC Hospital School was the beneficiary of a gift from Oprah Winfrey. Winfrey presented $1,000 to guests attending the taping of an episode called “Pay It Forward.â€Â Guests were asked to present the funds to a good cause and create a video of the presentation. Renee and Melissa Bailey attended the taping and received one of the gifts. Renee and Melissa used the funds to purchase books and a computer for the Hospital School.
