The Orange County Solid Waste Management Department announced this week that it expects to be sold out of yard-waste mulch through the end of August.
Recent maintenance down time on the yard-waste grinder combined with a high level of demand for mulch this year has led to the mulch supply being temporarily depleted. The grinder should be fully operational by early this month, at which time the department will start chipping yard waste again. However, in order to achieve a high-quality product, the fresh chips must cure for at least 45 days. Mulch sales should resume around Sept. 1.
Yard waste will continue to be collected at the landfill and convenience centers. Red mulch and compost is available at $28 per cubic yard.
