"Pre-writing for Tree People"

You already have done most of your pre-writing activity with your paradigm chart and possibly with your step outline as well.

If you didn't do a step outline, then you may still have work to do regarding your supporting characters - everyone other than your hero and villain. In the hero's journey paradigm, for example, major supporting characters are identified as "hero's helpers" and "villain's helpers" - that is, supporting characters that are important must be related to the central conflict in some way, which means they are in relationship to one or both of the major players, the hero and "villain" (antagonist).

At any rate, give the same kind of thought (if you haven't yet) to your major secondary characters as you are giving to your hero and villain.
