Stephanie's Id, The Old Ceremony
Pour House, Raleigh
The Old Ceremony's Django Haskins still writes songs of jaded lovers, ennui and cold calculation -- there's a reason the band is named after a Leonard Cohen album. But he also writes of passion, inspiration and hope in a decidedly non-world-weary manner. Hard not to be hopeful when fronting a band this great.

Invisible, Wigg Report
Blayloc, Durham
This is the opening night of a five-night residency running throughout February for the Triad-based Invisible, who will be performing a new work called The New Obsolete. Their "selectric piano" will be one of the primary instruments used.

An excerpt of films from the Strange Beauty Film Festival will precede Invisible's set, and the evening will be opened by the Wigg Report playing outside on the sidewalk.

The Dex Romweber Duo, Spider Bags, Flesh Wounds
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham
The garage-rock never stops in Durham -- the Spider Bags have been on a real tear of shows lately, and Dan McGee has his deranged middle-aged-man routine down to a science. The relatively new band Flesh Wounds (featuring Monty Morris of Last Year's Men, and Laura King of the Moaners) is the hottest craziest garage-rock outfit in town already.

Tonk, Mac McCaughan
The Cave, Chapel Hill
Tonk is a supergroup of sorts, made up of Raleigh rock musicians messing around with honky-tonk country.

Pipe, Chest Pains, The Bastages
The Pinhook, Durham
What does it mean that the Triangle boasts so many punk bands made up of dudes in their 40s? This isn't even all of them -- there's also Raleigh's Double Negative and probably a few more to boot. And what's more, they're actually good.

Brainbows
WXDU 88.7 FM, Durham
Brainbows are one of the most exciting young bands to come out of Durham in the past year or two -- super-noisy, still pretty poppy, with a raw postpunk energy that calls to mind all yr rudimentary faves from that initial anything-goes late-70s/early-80s postpunk era. 4:00 p.m. at 88.7 FM or wxdu.org.

Sharon Van Etten, Shearwater
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro
Sharon Van Etten has one of those voices that'll cut right through you -- her last album, Epic, was of the sort that in certain moods would stay in your player for days & weeks at a time. Her new album, Tramp, came out a couple of days ago.
