Melinda Brown's Home Page
Hi! I guess if you are interested enough to be on this page, the
least I could do is tell you a bit about myself! I currently work as an
Electronic Services Librarian at the University of Tennessee - Knoxville
Libraries. I received my Masters of Science in Library Science in
August of 1995 from the Master's program at the School of Information and Library
Science - UNC- Chapel Hill.
My decision to become a library/information type was partly
influenced by an interview I conducted with the University of
Wisconsin Women's Studies Librarian during my undergraduate days
there. While I was quite happy to recieve my Bachelor's of Science in
Women's Studies at that fine institution (and believe me, the irony of
having a BS in Women's Studies did not escape my notice), I found the
climate to be somewhat cooler than I, a native
Southerner (born in Knoxville and raised in Tullahoma, TN) was comfortable
with.
And just what does a Melinda do for fun?
I'm have listed a few of my favorite Web sites to visit in case you'd
like to try something that is, perhaps, new and different!
- The
Surrealist Compliment Generator, a sample: Woods nymphs sprinkle your
path with bowlings balls while you dance and prowl in the sequined
moonlight with leftover heads of lettuce.
- soc.support.youth.gay-lesbian-bi -
This is a great support group, and definitely worth checking out if you
are interested in L/G/B youth issues.
- Adult
Children of Heterosexuals Home Page - This a fun, cheeky site that was
started by members of the band of same name. Their warning: If you
have no sense of humor, or are offended by the glorious colorful musings
of bisexuals, transexuals, dykes, fags and freaks we strongly advise that
you stop viewing this RIGHT NOW! (There's so much else you could be
doing...)
- WisCon 20 - only the
niftiest science fiction convention I've ever been to. It's feminist
oriented and the guest of honor for 1996 is Ursula LeGuin! Need I say
more?
- The
Interactive Frog Dissection -- Ok, so maybe I think this is cool
because I refused to kill a frog for dissection in my undergraduate
biology class. This is here for all people who want to know about the
process, but don't want to kill another animal just for a required course.
The Personal Side
My current activities are pretty limited since I just moved here in
August of 1995. I am helping with the opening of a new women's bookstore
here in Knoxville called Pandora's Books. If you are interested in
supporting women's bookstores, you may want to check out the list of Feminist
Bookstores Worldwide.
In my spare time, I like to read science fiction, cook, write poetry and organize. I've been organizing bisexual
groups and serving on boards and committees for L/G/B/T community and
school groups in Wisconsin and North Carolina for about five years now,
and I'm pretty burned out. So I'm hoping to relax a little and get
recharged before heading out again. I'm enjoying spending some time with
my primary partner,
Lou, and my two girlie-girls (don't look if you're tired of cat
pictures!).
I do hope you've enjoyed your little tour of my home page, and,
please, drop in again sometime, or send me a little note at mfbrown@utk.edu.
