I am exploring the meaning of a three-legged cauldron pot, found at the bottom of a lake in New Jersey, and identified as probably a 700 AD artifact.

Since that time, I have seen many similar Chinese antiques, and I am puzzled as to their meaning. Sometime, a swan or two birds are represented in the ?? motif.

Any help on this? What are the meanings of the three legs, if any?
