Yeah, no question your paternal line is Jewish….I’m not going out on a limb much to say that. There’s really no other explanation since to go the other way…i.e. argue that all of the Jews in the group are not originally Jewish is a stretch…not only because lots of different folks would have had to convert to Judaism (because we match at very different levels…and so have common ancestors at varying points in time)…but not many people tended to convert to Judaism…it was a lot of work and you just got persecution for your trouble! Conversion the other direction was more common.

However, we have some very intriguing matches, especially at the more distant levels, that clearly point towards a Sephardic Jewish origin (even though most of our closes matches are Ashkenazi…or THOUGHT they were (-:)). So our group’s migration tale is going to be very interesting…”

And Anna (Cizewski, Felix A.’s wife) being able to recollect tales of the Jewish-Catholic conversion make it, as you say, very likely that happened within a few generations or the memory would have been ‘lost.’”

To An Unrecognized and Uncompensated Disabled Veteran? I’ve added President Obama’s remarks about how his great-uncle was effected by his participation in the liberation of the Ohrdruf sub-camp of Buchenwald. President Obama’s words also describe how Dad’s participation in the liberation of Dachau may have effected him.

I added a citation to a veteran’s report of cold injuries he suffered in Belgium to his legs and feet about the same time as Felix suffered similar injuries in France. Both had permanently disabling effects. The other veterans was given two 10% disability payments. That confirms my belief that with support and encouragement Felix would also have received some VA disability compensation.

As part of my observance of the 65th anniversary of D-Day, I did some work on Felix’s family history pages.

Felix did not land on D-Day. That’s because his unit, the 3110th Signal Service Battalion remained in southern England to work on communications for the Army Service Forces. The Army Service Forces were responsible for the support and supply of the troops who landed on D-Day. The 3110th was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation for this work.

Company C, in which Felix served, left England on July 24 and landed on Utah Beach on July 25, 1944. While in Normandy he served in Tamerville near Valognes from July 26 until August 18, 1944. From August 18 until September 14, 1944, Company C served in Cherbourg.

The Northern France page has been revised. A link has been added to a site which discusses the importance of Valognes as a communications center. Links have been added to photos from the Indiana State Library which depict scenes where Felix served.

Two photos with Felix in Cherbourg remain on the Northern France page. The other eight photos in his collection from Cherbourg have been moved to another page.

Another page has been added with 16 photos of Signal Corps personnel and facilities in Valognes and Cherbourg. They are from about the same time and places Felix served. They appear to be U.S. Army photos made available on a French Internet archive.
