Lesser Goals and Thoughts
Do we want a separate distro for faculty and students? Faculty/staff use things like Novell, Active Directory and VPN that students rarely use. I realize that with the network install size won't matter so much, but will people need to be on campus to do the network install? For people with desktops, this would be bad. I realize we are targeting the CCI laptops though, and with good reason. In general, would they have to have a boot CD to start it up? When responding please put a : (colon) in front of your response. Thanks. whitdoug 13:43, 29 June 2007 (EDT)
- I'm not so entirely sure that the statement "Faculty/staff use things like Novell, Active Directory and VPN" holds true outside of a very small minority of faculty. In the departments I'm familiar with, outside of CS, lots of folks consider it an accomplishment for their PowerPoint files to work correctly.
- While it may be true that not all faculty/staff use Novell/VPN/Active Directory etc, it IS true that some of them have to whether they want to or not and it's roughly the same as if powerpoint doesn't work. I'm tech support over at the General Administration (not South building) and while it's true that a lot of folks are still upset that we took away their typewriters in exchange for this disaster we call a computer, it's also true that this is not the set most likely to jump at UNCbuntu at all. I think support's going to have to be necessary for those things because if it isn't many Faculty/Staff will not have the option to use UNCbuntu for practical reasons. I'm not sure this necessitates two distributions, it might not hurt just to have a bit of overkill for the staff. ---Stephen Smith
- Just a friendly reminder to please remember to sign your posts. Also, I'll jump in and say at the School of Government, School of Medicine and the Development Office things like Novell and VPN are in use. Any of the constituent development officers that use Advise off campus would have to use VPN as well. Unless RPC over HTTP is used, anyone wanting to connect to an Exchange server is also going to have to use VPN. Whitdoug 09:07, 31 August 2007 (EDT)
- Its not only the staff and Faculty that has to use VPN: there are several cases where you must use a VPN in order to access certain subscriptions or servers if you happen to live off campus.Stephone
No. One distro, sane defaults, primarily student-focused. Cmpalmer 03:11, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
