Poop:
Dare is only in his third year of organized ball, yet has already
drawn comparisons to the likes of Ewing, Olajuwon, Motumbo and O'Neal.
Like those players, Dare is a power player. Unlike those players, he
is still learning the game.
Defensively, Dare is a good post defender, strong enough to defend the
biggest centers, who is athletic enough to defend on away from the basket.
He is a big time shot blocker who will be able to keep opposing players
from getting clear shots at the basket from close range. He still has
a lot learn as far as positioning and staying out of foul trouble.
Dare is also a topnotch rebounder.
Offensively, Dare has little more then a dunk for a repertoire. He
also had poor footwork and will require a lot of work.
The potential upside to Dare's game will more then likely make him
the first center taken (definitely a lottery pick). However, like
last year with Shawn Bradley, the team that picks him will have to
wait before they get the impact player.
It is rumored that Dare has already hired an agent and has left school,
making it impossible for him to go back if he does not like the team
that drafted him.

Poop:
Sharone Wright is considered by some to be the best center prospect
from the ACC this year. He had another fine season at Clemson despite
the fact that he had little help on the boards and an extremely
erratic backcourt, as well as having to pick up more of the scoring
load when Devin Gray went down. I think playing next to a good PF
will help his game a lot, and having a good PG will allow him to score
a lot with those soft hands of his. Sharone has the offensive game of
Elden Campbell combined with the defensive power of Dale Davis. He
could be as good as Horace Grant and Larry Nance if he finds the right
situation.
Wright is built for the NBA. He has an excellent variety of power
and finesse moves down low and should be able to score in the NBA
right away. He's been an ACC shotblocking leader during his career.
He's a very good rebounder, though he has a tendency to disappear
during games. He's quite good on the offensive boards especially,
specializing in putback jams.
The way to beat him is to make him put the ball on the floor, where
he has trouble holding onto it. Don't leave him open for a jumper,
though, or he'll drain it. This alone will make him effective in the
pros. He's also a good foul shooter, another valuable defensive
asset. His other main offensive weakness is his inability to pass out
of double teams effectively--this is a big reason Clemson had
problems. It's impossible to stop Sharone one-on-one, but you can
make him disappear if you double team him.
Defensively, the only way to beat him is to drive on him, because he
has a tendency to foul to compensate for poor positioning. Otherwise,
he'll reject shots and grab rebounds all day.
Sharone could probably stand to lose a few pounds, but I don't think
it's that much of a big deal. Most likely he's headed for the
lottery, and he should be able to play right away since most teams
need good centers.

Poop:
Eric Montross had what many have called a bad year. Actually he had
a bad month. Outside of mid-February to mid-March he had a good year.
Montross added a couple of nice post moves and improved his lefthanded
hook shot (Montross shot over 55% with the hook from the first of the
year on, when I started tracking it). Montross' offensive game is
hurt by a lack of anykind of outside shot. Many times Eric would be
about 10 feet fromt he basket with no one guarding him and he would
not have a clue of how to score. Montross was also hurt by the lack
of a turnaround shot and a fall away. For Montross to have a real
impact in the NBA he will need the fall away/turnaround. Montross is
a fine outlet passer and is good at finding the open man when he is
double teamed (which was almost always).
Defensively, Montross is a very good defender in the post (the Poop
Sheet, a local ACC paper, ranked him the 4th best defensive player
in the ACC). However, because of UNC's switching/trapping defense,
Montross was often left chasing guards on the perimeter where is
was much less effective. Because of a lack of lateral quickness,
Montross will probably never be a good defender away from the post
in the NBA.
Montross is a very good rebounder. He boxes out well but sometimes
waits for a team mate to get the rebound. This was not a problem
last year with Lynch, it hurt at times this year. Montross also
improved as a shotblocker this year.
Montross' stock is said to be falling, with Dare and Wright having
a bigger potential upside they may well be picked ahead of Eric.
However should still be a top 15 pick. Without the collapsing zones
and endless double/triple teams, Montross should be a effective NBA
center for years to come, however lack of quickness will probably
keep him from becoming an upper echelon center.

Poop:
McIlvane is a player. He is more mobile than a lot of people give him
credit for, and his performance in the NCAA will only move him up in
draft position. Blocks shots - a lot of shots. Led Division I in
shots blocked. He plays excellent defence, and in fact, gets out to
shooters very well. This is his prime talent. He is the most
intimadating of the centers defensively in this draft. His abilty to
help out and block or change shots is something that is called for in
NBA defenses, and it is something he will be able to do. No other
center has that ability to consistantly block shots on players they
are not primarily guarding.
His offense in the NBA would be more of a complimentary type, but
there is plenty of call for an adequate center, or even a very good
backup center in the NBA. Just ask Golden State. Still, he is not
going to hurt you by being unable to score when given the opportunity.
He has a decent free throw line jump shot, and his post moves are
good.
His rebounding is a good, but it needs work. He is thin, and sometimes
has great difficulty in blocking out players who can quick their way
around him. With a stength program perhaps he will become better at
rebounding, but it is hard to tell at this stage what effect that will
have. After all, at 7 foot he is going to get quite a few boards
anyway.
Overall, I think McIlvane is perhaps the most ready of the centers who
have declared to actually play in the NBA right now. His ability as a
shot blocker alone is enough to make him effective. His potential is
not as large as Dare or Wright, but he has more then either of them
right now. While I expect McIlvane to be selected in the late first
round, I would not be suprised if he is the steal of the draft.

Keven entered UNC as a marginal (and very skinny) Division 1 prospect
and showed dramatic improvement every year at UNC. Always a good
shotblocker, Sal became a much better rebounder and an offensive
threat his senior year. Sal suffers from asthma which limits his
playing time to 3-5 minute bursts.
Offensively his best moves are a little hook shot that looks awkward
but effective. He also can spot up from the free throw line and hit
the shot.
Defensively Sal will get pushed around a little, although he is much
stronger then even a year ago, he will still need to add strength to
survive in the NBA.
Sal will more then likely end up a late first round/ second round pick
and play many years as a NBA backup center.
