Joe Smith is a natural hard working player. He needs to put on
another 20 to 30 pounds to competively compete in the NBA. Joe
has the agility to block shots and run the floor. Joe has a
silky smooth jump shot. However, against a taller player Joe
has a difficult time making his shots. Tall players, such as
Tim Duncan of Wake Forest and Rasheed Wallace of UNC, have held
Joe in check and neutralize his offense abilities.
I see Joe as a power forward in the NBA. I see no weaknesses
in his defensive game. He can guard his man pretty well, but
has troubled with players in the paint who can pump-faked. His
blocking skills are outstanding. BTW, one thing that has hurt
Joe this year was his tendency to get into early foul trouble in
some games. Maybe the NBA refs aren't as picky as the college
refs. However, I think Joe should work on getting into less
foul troubles.
Joe is a good free throw shooter. He has a shooter's touch.
Joe is a relentless rebounder, who will go after his shots if
missed.
Offensively, Joe has no weaknesses except for his troubles
against taller players (as stated above).
Joe is the Man. He can do it all. He will be a great addition
to any team in the NBA. But I greatly believe that he needs to
bulk a la Alonzo Mourning.

Strengths:
o He is mature for is age and that is reflected on the court.
He dealt with a lot of pressure in big games this year and his
maturity showed offensively, defensively, and at the free throw
line (76%).
o Nice jumper from the free throw kine in. Occasionally can
hit the long jumper in order to keep defenses honest.
o Smooth moves around the basket especially against double
teams and larger opponents. Sometimes tries to force things
though.
o Great rebounder. He has a good sense for the ball and is
quick.
o Can run the court with the best of them. Reminds me of D.
manning a little bit (although he doesn't quite have the ball
handling ability).
o Good shot blocker. He doesn't just slam the shot out of
bounce but keeps the bal in play for his teammates.
o Smart. Knows how to play in foul trouble and not make the
dumb foul.
o All around nice guy (I hope. I'm a Maryland fan, remember,
we have reason to be paranoid)
Weaknesses:
o Size! He has played post for two years. He is too small for
that position in the NBA.
o Passing. He needs to work on passing back out to the guards
and forwards on the perimeter.
o Occasionally gets out of position on the defensive end going
for shot blocks.
o As I mentioned earlier, he sometime forces things which
aren't there.

Rasheed came to UNC ranked as the number one prospect in high school in
1993. He was considered the best big man in Philadelphia since Wilt.
Rasheed shocked most recruting analysts by choosing UNC over Temple and
Villanova. Rasheed is a very gifted athlete who was a runner in HS as
well as basketball player. Watching Rasheed run the break is a thing of
beauty. Rasheed is not considered a mature athlete however, frequent
complaining about fouls (or lack of fouls) did not endear him to many
ACC officials (I can not even guess at the number of technical fouls he
has had).
Offensively, Rasheed is unstoppable on the break and is a great finisher.
He can jump out of the gym and is lightning quick. He has an almost
unstoppable turn around (it is so quick and high that few will be able
to contest it). He developed a decent hook shot with his right hand.
Rasheed's can hit a 15 footer but will need to work on that a bit. His
major weakness is that he really does not have a left hand. He is also
not a very good free throw shooter.
Defensively, he is a good defender but not great. He is a very good
shotblocker who is still learning when not to go for the block. He is
a very good rebounder as far as getting the ball but needs work in blocking
out. He still reaches to much causing unnecessary foul trouble. Rasheed
will need to get much stronger to play against the Karl Malones of the NBA.
A lot has been made about the way Williamson abused him in the NCAA final
four. Really he did hit some tough shots and only had one move that left
Rasheed in the dust. I would not hold that against him to much.
I have yet to hear one GM/scout say that Rasheed is ready but it would be
hard for anyone to turn down that much money. Rasheed will need to put in
much time in the weight room and grow up quick (I hate to think of what
Rodman will do to him :-)). Overall with his talent, he should be a
dominating player for many years to come. He should be a high lottery
pick.

Antonio McDyess is the latest in the line of big-time forwards to
come out of the Alabama basketball factory. From Reggie "Mule" King
to Buck Johnson to Derrick McKey to Robert Horry, McDyess is from
the same mold -- a running, jumping, dunking athletic type who has
a lot of raw skill. McDyess can really jump with the best of them
and is a terrific shot blocker, and is killer on the offensive glass.
Offensively, he has some pretty good post moves, as well as a nice
turn-around fadaway, in which he uses his tremendous lift to shoot
over taller opponents (shown in his performance against Big Country
Bryant Reeves in the NCAAs). Unlike perhaps the likes of McKey and
Horry, his outside shooting isn't that great, but has potential.
He's also not the greatest ball-handler, and is quite foul-prone.
But he does have all the tools and should be able to be a solid PF
in the pros, filling in at center in a pinch. in the future, he
could even see some time at SF -- something the likes of former
Alabama centers Horry/McKey/Benoit have ended up doing in the NBA.
Could be picked anywhere from the mid-late lottery to the middle
1st round.

Williamson was projected as a possible top five pick after being the MVP
of the 1994 NCAA leading Arkansas to the title. After having a somewhat
disappointing junior year, his stock has fallen. Williamson really hurt
himself by having a very poor game against UCLA. Against the slower Zidek,
Williamson often got himself into trouble and let UCLA double team him.
When this happened, he made some very bad decisions. This has led NBA
teams to question if he has an NBA game. Actually what it showed is that
he could have trouble against taller, stronger players.
Offensively, he has a very strong inside game. Having schooled Rasheed
Wallace in the semi-finals, his finals performance might have been a
reflection of over confidence. Williamson has good quickness and runs
the break well. He used this quickness to try to draw people out and then
blow by them. This worked better last year. This year people (like UCLA)
laid off him and dared him to beat them from the outside. This is his
greatest weakness. However, he is a hard worker and like Larry Johnson,
who also had no real outside game when he came into the league, Williamson
can develop one.
Defensively, Williamson is a hard worker, but again, in the NBA he will be
guarding people who are bigger, stronger and quicker then he is. At 6-7
this is a real concern. This has hurt Johnson at Charlotte, at 6-5 he has
had a lot of trouble with 6-10 guys. Williamson is a good rebounder but
needs to work on his positioning. On thing that has crept up this year
is that he is starting to have some foul trouble. Williamson fouled out
in the finals of the SEC tournament and the first two games in the NCAA.
Williamson can still be a top five pick, but with all the underclassmen
it will probably not happen. Still he is a lock to be a lottery pick and
probably a top 10 pick. Williamson will have to work hard to be a impact
NBA power forward at 6-7 or improve his quickness/outside skills to be
a NBA small forward.

Garnett is boldly trying to go where no one since Darryl Dawkins has gone,
straight from HS to the NBA. Garnett has had grade problems as a long ago
as his Junior year it was reported that he probably would not be able to
get into college. Garnett is very quick and has great hand and a real soft
touch. He is also a great passer, being compared to Bill Walton and has
very good ball handling skills. His HS coach said that he is the best
passing big man he has ever seen. At 215 (and with little muscle) he is
going to get pushed around a lot. Last year he averaged 25.2 points, 17.9
rebounds and 6.5 blocks a game. He was the MVP of the McDonalds All-Star

I'm not real sure where Garnett will go in the draft. I've heard that the

Pete Setter Jr rates him as the 6th or 7th pick saying, "He's perfect for

Bennett reminds me a lot of Lorenzo Orr (not surprisingly, the other
person I wrote a report on) in that he is skinny for his position, but
can leap out of the building. Bennett is a superb shot-blocker for
that reason, but is rather a disappointing rebounder. He is tall
enough to play PF in the pros, and will if anything, be quicker than
the average, but is light and will be pushed around. This year
Bennett had to step up to take over the scoring load for the departed
Stevin Smith, and was the unquestioned star for an Arizona State team
that did surprisingly well in a very talented PAC-10. His numbers
were all up from last year, and he seemed to be completely recovered
from the serious knee injury (ACL) that he suffered in summer '92. He
played completely on the inside at ASU, and his poor free-throw %
suggests that that's where his strength lies, although I think he may
have hit a couple of 3-pointers this year. Like Orr, he occasionally
looks bored out on the floor and can disappear, but in general he has
been a reliable scorer (with some good moves around the basket, and he
can beat most people his height off the dribble) and a great
shot-blocking defender in college.
PROGNOSIS: An excellent college low-post player, who may be too
sleight to play PF on a consistent basis in the pros, and lacks the
skills to thrive at SF (he is poor at shooting, passing and
dribbling). Could do well with a running, pressing team like Seattle,
but would be a great risk for a lottery pick, and needs to play with
good rebounders. Reminds me of Bo Outlaw (of the Clippers) with much
better post-up moves, but maybe less of the exuberance. Should go
middle-to-late first round, particularly with the number of good PFs
coming out this year.
Scout: "Simon S.C. Cushing"
More poop:
I clearly see him as a lottery pick. He's a confident player who
loves the NBA style. Despite being a junior, he's been a dominate player
in the Pac-10 ever since him sophomore season.
Offensively, he must work on his game facing the basket. Posting
up slower players, he can use a number of moves to find a good shot.
With his tremendous jumping ability he can hit the offensive glass
effectively. While running the floor, he can be a tremendous finisher.
He's an average free throw shooter and doesn't have a shot beyond 15
ft. Unlike the power forwards ahead of him, he can put the ball on the
floor and make the spectacular pass.
On defense, his strength is often his weakness. Like so many
great shot blockers he's often in foul trouble. Whether it's from the
strong or weak side, he'll swat anything. Since the Sun Devils play
straight up on defense, he's good at moving his feet and getting the
loose ball. Perhaps it was the full court defense that ASU played, but
I noticed that he was often tired during critical stretches of the
game.
I see Bennett going before the 10th pick. He has the NBA
mentality like other Frieder recruits (RIce, Vaught, Mills). As long as he
doesn't have to play more then 35 minutes a game, he should live up to
his billing.

Overview
========
Alan Henderson has completed his sentence in the Indiana
prison. Most of his time in Bobby Knight's motion offense was spent as
an active forward, but he did spend considerable time simulating the
center position, a roll he probably will not have to do in the NBA.
Henderson had an outstanding career at Indiana finishing high in
several statistical categories including rebounds, blocked shots, and
points per game. All these numbers would probably be higher but for a
severe knee injury in the middle of his college career.
Offensive Potential
===================
Big men have trouble at Indiana. It's more true of centers
than forwards, but it's still true. Knight's offensive ideas differ
from most college and almost all Pro teams. I think that Henderson
would do best with a team with the time to develop him more on the
offensive side. As a college player, Alan seemed to have his best
games when he was very emotional. The NBA plays a ton of games so it's
skill and talent that must carry a player. Accordingly, Alan will be a
little disadvantaged in the Pro game. I think he could do better at
power-style play than fluid, deceptive moves. For a black guy, Alan is
a little stiff. There is no comparing him to a smooth, athletic
forward like Calbert Cheaney.
Defensive Potential
===================
The good news is that, as a Hoosier, Henderson has a helluva
lot of defensive training under his belt. The bad news is that most of
the NBA doesn't know defense from shinola. But, a team that DOES want
to play good, legal, man-to-man defense will find him an asset. So he
may have to forget some stuff to play in the NBA, but he is ready to
play good defense against at least FAB 5 calibre players.
Summary and Draft Potential
===========================
Henderson has the talent to make it in the NBA.....maybe not
as a superstar but as a very useful role player. His best quality not
mentioned above is intelligence. If you need to fit him into a scheme,
he can learn it and perform. (If you need a Dennis Rodman-clone for
publicity, you're in deep serious doo-doo. Alan ain't your guy!!)
I have no clue as to which teams he would fit best with. I'm
guessing he will be drafted around pick 18 to 20.

Junior is a power forward. Some have called him a
tweener, too small for power forward and too slow for small
forward, but Junior has the skills to play power forward
against taller competition. Junior's strengths are strength,
footwork, and a creative use of his amazing repertoire of post
moves. As a senior Junior showed intelligence and character.
He was a team leader, and played good basketball. Gone were
the silly turnovers and bad shots of previous years. Junior
had his biggest games in the biggest games, averaging over 25
points per game in UVA's 7 post-season games. Burrough is
underrated for his board work and interior defense.
Junior's weaknesses are foot speed, leaping ability,
hands and shooting range. While he is a good shooter in the
lane, with a turnaround jumper that can be accurate out to 12
feet, he does not have a reliable 15-18 foot jumper. In his
first three years, Junior was wont to fumble passes and lose
rebounds. His hands improved dramatically his last year.
While Junior's below-the-rim game is solid, he is not a quick
or high leaper. Thus, he must rely on positioning.
Junior Burrough would make some team a fine backup
power forward. While not an impact player in the NBA, he would
be a solid member of a playoff team. His leadership potential
is high, as Junior has great fundamentals, character, wisdom,
intelligence, and charisma. His leadership was a major factor
in UVA's successful season. Junior is a late first round or
very early second round player.

Poop:
One would have to say that Kurt Thomas fit in well in Billy Tubbs system
:-). He led the nation in the scoring and rebounding this past season and
really help improve his stock in the NBA. Actually as good as Thomas'
numbers where this year, they were just as impressive last year when he
played with a broken left thumb. Thomas finally stayed healthy for
the first time in his career (which is of some concern). Not a great
athlete, Thomas also has a tendency to pout when things do not go his
way.
Offensively, Thomas has a good touch and soft hands (pluses for a big man).
He is also very aggressive with the ball.
Defensively, he is a *great* rebounder. He works hard at covering his
man, but will have problems against the quicker players in the NBA.
Thomas will more then likely be a mid-late first round pick. Given the
right team and a little time, he could become a solid NBA player. He
should watch Juwan Howard to see how to survive in the NBA without being
a great athlete.

* - was granted injury redshirt in 92-93
Poop:
Vaughn is a good player with some skills but has been a bit injury
plagued. He has missed several weeks with a stress fracture in his
left foot and missed most of the 92-93 season with a torn anterior
cruciate ligament in his left knee. Vaughn's career got off to a
great start making the Midwest Regional final, and making the
Basketball Times first-team All-Freshmen team.
Offensively, Vaughn has played out of position in the post which has
caused his performance to suffer (his shooting performance was hurt
by to many fall away jumpers). Vaughn is not a very good ballhandler
and will need to improve his passing skills and cut down on the
turnovers.
Defensively, Vaughn has good size and strenght and uses it well. He
has become a good post defender. How he does away from the basket
remains to be seen. He is a very good rebounder.
Vaughn will probably be a mid-first round pick. If he learns to play
more aggressively, and stays injury free, he could be a solid NBA power
forward for years to come.

DeClercq is a blue collar player, very hard working and not afraid to get
his hands dirty. DeClercq came alive during Floridas Final Four run in
1994 and had a great game against Boston College. Unlike the rest of
the Florida team, DeClercq had a better year in 1995 improving his stats
in almost every category.
Offensively, DeClercq needs some improvement. He will never be a big time
scorer but he does have a soft touch and can hit the mid-range shot. He
runs the floor well and can help on the break.
Defensively, DeClercq is a good rebounder and a decent shot blocker. He is
also a good leaper. He hustles on every play and never gives up which
usally makes for a good defender. However, lack of lateral quickness and
strength will present a problem.
Overall, DeClercq is a hustling, hard working player that should be a late
first round pick. I don't see him ever becoming a front line player but
with some work he might be a good 7th man for a decent team.

Larson is a talented offensive player, with good, quick moves,
especially facing the basket, and a good touch around the basket.
He's very athletic for a 6'11 guy. He's not afraid to mix it up, but
he doesn't have the frame to really establish great position down low.
He has a good mid-range jump shot, did not attempt many shots beyond
15 feet in college. Also, ball-handling is a question, as he did not
spend much time dribbling in college. Defensively, he doesn't have a
great reputation. He's not a great shot-blocker, and needs to gain a
little weight. The conventional wisdom was that in college, he was a
big offensive plus for BYU when he was in, but was a bit of a
defensive liability. He's Cherokee Parks without the three-point
shot, and with less shot-blocking ability.
In the pros, Larson figures to be a solid role-player off the bench,
jumping in at PF, with good offensive skills and hopefully learns to
play defense better. Compare him to someone like Larry Krystkowiak,
and, at best, he perhaps has the potential to become as good as Tom
Chambers offensively. He could possibly be drafted late in the second
round, but I expect him not to be drafted, but definitely to be
invited to some camps, with a good chance to make a team. To make the
NBA, he must prove that he can play defense and that he can hit the
outside jump shot consistently.

Poop:
"Lo" (I guess 'Zo is taken) never really lived up to his apparent potential
at USC, although he did have to play on some pretty abysmal teams. He's
older than most seniors, as I think he took a couple of years off before
USC (academics?) and although he's only got the body for a SF, he's only
ever played inside at USC thanks to a general lack of height while he was
here (this year Jaha Wilson was playing centre, at all of 6'5"!). The most
noticeable thing about Orr is his amazing hops: he famously can do a
cartwheel dunk (palms ball, does cartwheel, comes straight out of cartwheel
to dunk the ball) and brought down a backboard in Washington once. However,
he always seems somewhat sluggish on court and has no particular go-to move.
Once in a while he will ignite the crown with a showy block or a 360 dunk,
but he lacks fundamentals (which is pretty poor, considering his age) and
has had no opportunity to show that he could handle the skills required for
SF in the pros. He has also been plagued by foul trouble throughout his
career, partly this year (when he did step up, but by no means carried the
team as he should have, given his status as senior and sole "star") because
he _was_ USC's star player and teams went right at him, but also because he
tends to bite on fakes and go for the block. Also as a result, he gets
fewer rebounds than he should, particularly given his jumping ability.
I would say he has no chance at a pro career, if it weren't for two factors:
first, he tends to step up for big games, particularly against UCLA - in the
past couple of years he definitely held his own against Ed O'Bannon,
resulting in a couple of upset wins. Second, he may actually _have_ some
of the SF skills he didn't have a chance to show. I've seen him in pickup
games dribbling the length of the court and draining a '3', and he has the
hang-time to become a very good jump-shooter if he really worked on his
shot. He doesn't seem to have an attitude, which is both good and bad:
good because he's not a brat, but bad because he doesn't push himself.
Needs to really make a showing in the camps to have a chance of being
drafted, but otherwise, will probably join fellow Trojans Mark Boyd,
Yamen Sanders and Duane Cooper in the CBA.

Name: Dragan Tarlac
College: Serbia
Height: 6-10.5
Weight:
Position: Power Forward
Other positions: Center
Strengths: Defense, shot blocking
Weaknesses: Offense, lack of competition
Stats:
Poop:
Dragan Tarlac was born on the 12th of May 1973. He is 2.10 meters tall
(6'10 1/2 feet). He is Serb. He played for Red Star Belgrade and the
under-18 squad of the former Yugoslavia, before coming to Piraeus, Greece
and the Olympiakos club four years ago. He came to Greece at the perfect
time for him. With the dissolution of Yugoslavia, he was able to play as a
Greek citizen. This was because FIBA enacted a rule, that if a player's
country of origin doesn't exist anymore (also applied to former Soviet
Union) that player can adopt a country of his choice! The big bucks, in
European basketball are in Greece, and Greece is a close ally of Serbia's.
The rest is history. Tarlac, by playing as a Greek, not only had the
pleasure of playing alongside two other great foreign players (instead of
one) but also became part of one of the greatest teams in European
basketball history. Alongside such greats as Walter Berry (in 1992-3), Roy
Tarpley (in 1993-4), Eddie Johnson (1994-5), Zarko Paspalj ('91-'94), and
Alexander Volkov (1994-5) he formed a monster team, the likes of which
only Real Madrid could boast of in the last four years (with Sabonis).
Olympiakos has captured second place in Europe for the last two seasons,
losing to Badalona in 1994 and Real Madrid (of Sabonis-headed for the
Trailblazers- fame) this year.
Dragan is more of a defensive player, than an offensive player.
He has had the luxury of playing under the brilliant coaching of Ioannis
Ioannidis (one of the best coaches in Europe with a 299-37 record in the
Greek League and a 86-51 record in European competition). Tarlac is
powerful, gutsy, motivated, and quick to learn. Here are his strengths
and weaknesses (a SWOT analysis if you will):
Strengths: 1)great shot blocker (look at stats below)
2)height and strength (a force in the paint)
3)experience (superior to that of college players- how
many college ball players duel with great centers such
as Stojan Vrankovic, Panagiotis Fasoulas (top shot blocker
in Toronto World Championships ahead of Shaq), Arvydas
Sabonis and Roy Tarpley)?
4)good role player (has never started, eventhough he's
one of the best power forwards/centers in Europe- but gets
the most out of his 20 some minutes per game (look at
tendex rating below, and remember Euro games are only 40
minutes long, so 20 mins isn't bad)
Weaknesses: 1)shot- not as good as Joe Smith, Cherokee Parks, and
other American NBA hopefuls
2)injured for most of last season and so missed crucial
time to develop game
3)gets most points on put-backs, dunks, and lay-yps
4)same as all euro players- i.e. not as many games
played as in the NBA (all together it should come out to
approximately 60 in a season, including friendlies)
Here are his stats in the European Championship 1994-5, before the
Final Four but after the group stage (14 games) and the quarterfinals
3 games):
GP Mins 2p 2p% 1p 1p% OR+DR=TR AS TO ST POINTS PPG
17 429 76/122 62.3 45/65 69.2 38+78=116 2 32 15 197 11.6
Here are the categories in which he placed in the top 12 in the
Greek League 1994-5 (26 games played):
1) 2p%: 97/151, 64%, 1st in the League!
2) Blocks: 40, 6th in the League
3) Tendex: .717, 523 mins, 3rd in the League (behind Berry and
Volkov)
My appraisal of his draft position: he's as good as Fetisov, who
went at #36 last year (I believe that to be right). He should go in the
40's because he didn't get the exposure Fetisov got in the World
Championships in Toronto, last year.

Strong points:
excellent leaper.
excellent shot blocker, one of the best in the nation.
very good defender for men his size or slightly larger, a
better defensive player than offensive.
temperment good (his reaction to Wallace's elbow in the UNC
game was very atypical, he's usually very placid and only
gets angry at himself).
good rebounder for his size (good hands).
reasonable low post moves (when *very* close to the basket).
Weak points:
long distance shot non-existent (despite this being almost
a requirement for Pitino players, Andre has never made a 3
at UK nor come very close to making one).
medium distance shot weak (can hit from 8-10 ft, but has
seldom been asked to do this much). Has been working to
improve this, and has gotten somewhat better his senior
year, so maybe there is hope here for future development.
free throw shooting atrocious (during senior year, only hit
55.3%, and that was his career high!). Thus cannot be in
the game in critical final situations if FT shooting is
probable. But he has increased his FT shooting from an
initial 26.3%, so he is capable of improving his play with
hard work.
slightly foul prone. Is often not needed at the end of games
(where his FT woes hurt him), so this is not a terrible
liability. Can occasionally play well despite foul problems.
Probable NBA position:
difficult to say - much too small to play center
except in backup role, shooting and ballhandling too poor
to play reliably at big forward, insufficient ballhandling
and much too weak in outshoot shooting to play small forward.
I will be very interested seeing who (if anyone) picks him,
and where they'll play him.

Strengths: About the right size for an NBA power forward at 6-8, 265.
Very strong, gets good position. Reasonably quick for someone his
size. Has some good moves with back to the basket and showed
offensive improvement in 2 years at Illinois. Pretty good touch from
inside 12 feet. Was effective at finding the open man when double
teamed. Decent defender. Solid rebounder. Plays extremely hard.
Weaknesses: Doesn't jump well. Has trouble getting shots off against
taller opponents. Not a shot blocker. No outside shot. Marginal
free throw shooter. Many off court problems. Was suspended for first
5 games this year after being arrested for a domestic incident
(charges were dropped) and served 15 days in jail for a second
conviction of driving with a suspended license and other related
charges.
Summary: Clark won't be drafted due to questionable off court
activities but could resurface in the NBA in after a couple years in
the CBA or abroad if he continues to improve his game and avoids
further legal troubles.
