Scouting Reports

Dan McClintock has the misfortune to be in a draft that is deep with talented big men. If this were any other year, he would be a sure first rounder.

I think that McClintock lacks the speed and rebounding skills to be a first round pick in this draft. He has good post moves (a nice turn-around jumper and a great hook from the lane) and has shown good range from the floor. He has a great shooting touch inside and from outside (I heard he was hitting 3's in Chicago). The offense at NAU is focused on outside shooting, so few plays were ran for him, but he still got his points and was among the top in the nation at FG% most of his career. He is a good passer from the post, but may have trouble adapting to NBA defensive players and their quickness. He has much more offensive skill than a player like Travis Knight, but he is not as quick and can not run the floor quite as well.

Most scouts say his defense is NBA worthy, but I disagree. Sure, he had his share of blocks in his college career, but he was going up against 6-9 centers in the Big Sky. He does not move his feet well on defense and relies on his shot blocking too much. He is a hard worker and he can be taught some things but he can not be taught quickness. Seven footers are hard to come by, and I think Dan will make it as a backup center on an NBA team, but I do not see any team taking him in the first round.

McClintock's biggest plus is his personality. He is simply a great guy. With sports teams being more and more concerned with the image and reputation of players, McClintock is a breath of fresh air. He is smart, articulate, cooperative with the media and overall a genuinely nice guy. He does not seem to have an ego at all, which may actually be why his rebounding numbers are not as high as they could be (it takes attitude to clean the glass effectively). The offense was never about him while he was at NAU, and he never complained about it. He simply did what the coaches told him he needed to do to help the team win.

During the NCAA tournament, McClintock stepped up his game and nearly carried the team to a win over heavily favored St. Johns. With the right coaching, he can add some depth and scoring to any team's bench at the next level.
