Additional Information
With the draft now just two weeks away the Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets are making a major push to get into the top six picks in the 2001 NBA Draft.  A league source told sportsTALK late last night that both teams are in the hunt for F.C. Barcelona forward Pau Gasol.  The Rockets and the Celtics are among several suitors that covet 7'1" forward from Barcelona despite the fact that he has yet to work out for an NBA team.

Both the Rockets and the Celtics have offered the Vancouver Grizzlies multiple first round picks to move up to number six, the source told sportsTALK.  The Celtics have offered their 10th and 11th picks while the Rockets are offering their 13th and 18th picks. The Grizzlies like Gasol as well, but prefer Michigan State guard Jason Richardson.  The Grizzlies are afraid that if they trade down they'll lose their chance to draft Richardson. The Nets (7th) and the Cavs (8th) also have eyes for Richardson.

Boston has the inside track with the Grizzlies right now and Houston is also talking with the New Jersey Nets about sending their 13th and 18th picks to the Nets in return for the Nets 7th pick.  According to the same league source, the Rockets also like Charlotte forward Rodney White and will pursue him if they cannot land Gasol. If the Rockets cannot move their picks they likely still land a foreign prospect.  Expect them to take Yugoslavian forward Vladimir Radmanovic with their 18th pick if trade talks fall through.

The Celtics originally tried to work out a deal with the Atlanta Hawks for the third pick in the draft.  However, Atlanta is demanding a veteran, not more draft picks, to get a deal done.

As for Gasol, the 7-foot scorer from Spain, the word from league people now is that he'll play in the NBA this season if he goes in the top five (the extra money will help him deal with buying out the last year of his contract) and that he'll remain in the draft if he's certain to be taken in the top 10. In the latter case, Gasol may go back to Spain and finish his deal before hooking up with the team that drafts him.
Steve Bulpett - Boston Hearld (June 10th)

The word in Chicago is that F.C. Barcelona's Pau Gasol might withdraw by June 20, honor his final year of his contract, and then enter next season when he could go higher than late in the lottery. Watching him in Barcelona last week on television, the 7-foot-1 Gasol does have Dirk Nowitzki-like skills as a face-the-basket, ball-handling small forward. More teams will start to pursue him the longer he keeps the NBA at bay.

Strengths: Good face up shooter can shoot from the perimeter as far as the 3-point line .... Runs the floor well loves to operate in the open court for the dunk ..... Due to his excellent height Gasol can shoot over most defenders .... Creates mismatches due to his ability to play multiple positions (Sg, Sf, Pf, C) .... Can dribble past most defender for the penetration once there he can dish to the open teammate .... Smart player is a quick learner and can adjust his game according to how the defense plays him .... Has a nice pull up jumper off the dribble ..... Some scouts have said that Gasol reminds them of Toni Kukoc but I must say he resembles a more polished Robert Horry ....

Weakness: Not very good playing with his back to the basket .... Doesn't have the best upper body would stand to gain more muscle .... Not a very good defender doesn't have the intensity, or the speed to guard fast players ... Needs to gain about 10-15 pounds depending on what position (Pf-Sf ?) he will play... Could stand to develop some moves in the low post ... Shot selection isn't as good as it should be needs to relax more and let the game come him .... The team drafting him might have to wait until next year to receive Gasol as he has one more year left on his contract with Barcelona ....
