During the 2003 ASA Meeting, graduate students of culture came
together to form a research network. This network is similar to other
existing research networks, working to facilitate communication among
people of similar interests and to better connect people to the
larger section. The student network differs, however, in that those
involved not only share a broad research interest, but are also in a
similar institutional and professional position. This means that
activities of the network can go beyond connecting students of
similar research interests. We also:
Disseminate information about publication and presentation
opportunities for grad students
Share advice about dissertations and theses
Support one another in our professionalization
Compare and contrast reading lists for our
comprehensive/qualifying exams in culture
Encourage students of culture to join ASA and the culture
section
In recent years, we have held a roundtable session for the network at
the ASA Meetings. These intimate sessions are valuable to graduate
students, allowing us to workshop our ideas in a supportive setting.
The student network maintains an email list of over 200 members
through the University of Virginia. For more information, please
