Grad Apps Up
by Jennifer Byrd
College seniors are still not optimistic.
Graduate school applications are up across the country as students
choose to wait out the recession.
So far, Carolina has received more than 10,000 applications for
the fall. That is a seven percent increase from 2001.
Students say they are choosing this route because jobs are just
too hard to find.
Some think sharpening their skills now will make them more employable
later. But, more applications means stiffer competition.
Administrators say they are looking for high GRE scores, a well-rounded
undergraduate experience and students who know what they want to
do.
Peggy Berryhill, Director of Admissions and Student Records at
the Graduate School, says, "If you are not sure that graduate
school is what you are ready for, then take a year or two to explore
what you are really interested in. Then, come back and apply after
you have gotten refreshed, taken some time off for yourself, and
focused on what it is you're interested in doing."
Directors at the Graduate School expect the surge of application
to continue until the last deadline in May.
