Women's
Point Guards
by Ben Hayes
While the men's basketball team has struggled at the start
of the season... this year's women's team is off to a quick
7 and one start, with the only loss coming to top ranked Connecticut.
The Heels fast start already has them right on point.
Nicky Teasley said, "At the point guard position it's sort
of like the quarterback on the football team you know, whether
you want to be or not you're the leader."
But this year's football team is lead by not one but two talented
quarterbacks.
This years women's basketball team presents an even bigger
challenge… three starting point guards.
Nicky Teasley also said, "even if you focus on one of us,
someone else can step up."
There is Nikki Teasley, the heralded senior leader and national
player of the year candidate.
Correta Brown, the junior returning starter and all ACC player
and, Lead Metcalf, the freshman sensation who head coach Sylvia
Hatchell says, already plays like a senior.
But unlike football, all three play at the same time, creating
a challenge for the opposition.
Coretta Brown said, "When you have three of us on the floor
at the same time, it makes it hard for the defense, who to
guard."
And each brings her own strengths to the court.
Nickey Teasely said her strength is "obviously my height,
everyone's not 6'1" at the point guard position."
Correta Brown said, "My biggest strength is probably
the drive and kick."
Leah Metcalf added that about herself, "I guess my quickness,
getting the ball up the open court, seeing the open person."
Because of their differences in style, they know they're in
a unique situation.
Coratta Brown commented that, "No, [she had] never been on
a team like this before."
They hope their three pronged attack will blend together for
in one common goal, to make it to the Final Four and go all
the way.
