Math Gender Gap
By Adaure Achumba

When it comes to Math, it seems like boys aren't any better than girls after all.

A report released by the Department of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill suggests that previous studies showing a Math gender gap are exaggerated.

This new report shows that until about the 8th grade girls have higher math scores than boys.

By the 12th grade boys do better, particularly in geometry.

Erin Leahey, one of the two researchers involved in this study, said that although the gender difference is small, it does not happen until about the 10th or 11th grade.

Leahey says that this happens because boys tend to grow at a faster rate than girls, however they eventually reach the same level.

UNC's Carolina Population Center and the W.T. Grant Foundation supported this three-year study.
