Qatar Update
by Tim Nelson

Negotiations continue between UNC Chapel Hill and the Qatar Foundation regarding the possible establishment of a satellite campus of the Kenan-Flagler Business School in the Persian Gulf country of Qatar.

The University is waiting for a response from the Qataris after submitting its budget proposal in December.

Several issues remain unresolved, including the level of security for Carolina faculty in Qatar and the amount of a one-time gift to UNC Chapel Hill.

UNC Chapel Hill asked for a gift of $35 million. A lawyer for the Qatar Foundation countered with a $10 million offer.

Chancellor James Moeser is expected to make a final decision next month.
