UNC High Jumper
by Jennifer Byrd
While most Carolina students are jumping into a new semester,
one UNC-Chapel Hill athlete is jumping over almost anything you
put in front of him.
UNC junior Adam Shunk jumped seven feet, four and one half inches,
which is higher than a doorway, higher than Kris Lang, and even
higher than the common sport utility vehicle.
He is currently ranked number one in the nation because of this
accomplishment.
Shunk said, "I have my magic shoes on, I attribute all my success
to the shoes, without them, I couldn't jump."
But it's not the springs in his lucky shoes that keep him jumping
high.
His teammates said he is "intense and focused" and "works hard."
Shunk may even have some of the basketball players a little worried
because of his ability to dunk the basketball.
When asked what his inspiration was, Shunk said, "I have always
been a fan of Mighty Mouse and Superman, obviously because he can
leap over tall buildings in a single bound."
The Indiana native also has a different side to his character.
His teammates said he is energetic, fun, crazy and bouncy.
Adam Shunk was named ACC Athlete of the Week for his ability to
jump.
He has also qualified for the Olympic trials and the NCAA championships.
