Help needed with recording Catalan sound filesAre you a regular user of Dacco? Would you like to give something back to the project? Do you have a microphone which you can connect to your computer and record sound files with? If so, we would like to hear from you. Help with Catalan NumbersEver struggled when it comes to writing Catalan numbers out in full? Not sure where to put your hyphens? Not sure whether we're living in 'dos mil cinc' or 'dos mil i cinc''? Never fear, help is at hand thanks to a rather nifty little program which lets you enter any figure between 1 and 1,000,000,000,000,000 and promptly returns the number written out in full in Catalan. You can find the program, kindly provided by Oriol Vilaseca, here. By admin at 01/04/2005 - 18:38
Catfon - help with Catalan pronunciation is here at lastThe Catalan writing system can be a challenge for an English speaker. While English dictionaries normally give the user a pronunciation guide, almost no Catalan dictionaries provide this information. Catfon is the answer to this problem. Catfon is a simple gui-based application that runs on almost any platform. It is an open source program released under the Gnu General Public License (GPL). To use it, just enter any word in standard Catalan orthography (including compounds and some apostrophised forms), click on the Convert button and a phonetic transcription appears below. The phonetic symbols are explained in a help menu. You can download Catfon here. By admin at 21/03/2005 - 14:35
Download, print, bind, use (printable version of Dacco available)We have recently been working on creating PDF versions of Dacco for those who might be interested in owning a printed copy of the dictionary. These PDF versions are specially formatted to create a neat, printed dictionary that resembles a traditional, print dictionary rather than a printed copy of an electronic dictionary. To see what we mean, click here. We have just released the Catalan-English section of the dictionary (with usage notes aimed at English speakers) in this format and would invite those who are interested to download it here. Getting involved with the Dacco projectFor the first time last week, we sent a list of words that users of Dacco had been looking up in the dictionary, but failing to find, to the Dacco mailing list. As the result of the discussion this created, we have been able to add a number of these words to the dictionary this week. The advantage of discussing new entries via the mailing list is that everybody who is interested can have their say and, with native speakers of both languages participating, everybody stands to learn something from the debate. If you would like to help build Dacco and participate in these weekly discussions, you can read the mailing list archives here and join the mailing list by clicking here. Firefox plugin for DaccoYou can now download the Dacco search engine for Firefox from here If you place the downloaded files in the 'Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins' directory on your computer, you will be able to use the Dacco search engine via a dropdown menu in the top toolbar of Firefox. Alternatively (or, 'as well', even), you can download Firefox's 'Dictionary Search 0.7' as follows: Tools > Extensions > Get more extensions > Dictionary Search 0.7. Then click on 'options' and fill in the following details under one of the dictionary slots: You will then be able to search for words in Dacco whilst browsing your online copy of Avui, or whatever, with a couple of simple right clicks - Of course, whether you'll find the damn words is another matter entirely ;-) By admin at 22/12/2004 - 20:49
Dacco - now just a mouse click awayEver thought that it would be handy when reading a Catalan newspaper or website on line if you could find out the English equivalent for a word you're 'stuck' on with a simple click of your mouse? Well now you can! You can download the program (only 3K in size) here. With our new download you can simply select the word you want to look up in any web page, double click to highlight it then right click. You will notice that you have a new option on your menu that appears when you right click which is 'Dacco Dictionary'. Click on that and you will be presented with a standard Dacco search results page. By admin at 07/10/2004 - 14:45 | read more
Adding gender to the English-Catalan dictionaryLast week we received an email from a German user of Dacco who very kindly informed us of a number of areas in which he thought Dacco could be improved. One specific point he made was that although the Catalan-English side of the dictionary informed users as to the gender of Catalan words, the English-Catalan side did not. We must admit that this was not something we had previously thought about but, on reflection, it seemed a very sensible idea. As this particular user pointed out 'what english speakers would need, is ... [to know] whether this word they are translating from English to Catalan is female (f) or male (m) in Catalan, so that they can build the correct grammar'). Which got us thinking how often we had looked up an English word in a bilingual dictionary, particularly when starting out in a language, found the 'equivalent' in the target language and thought 'hmmm... that's nice, but is it masculine or feminine?' and then had to scrabble around in the other side of the dictionary to find out... Dacco Catalan verb conjugator - now on line (in Beta)Up until now, it has been possible for users of Dacco to access conjugations for every Catalan verb contained in the dictionary by clicking on a link below the verb they were interested in. This resulted in said verb being taken and entered into an external web site owned by Verbix which hosted a free (but sadly not open-source) Catalan verb conjugator. However, whilst a fantastic free tool, we were not 100% happy with the Verbix conjugator for our purposes as By admin at 22/04/2004 - 15:19 | read more
New Dacco web siteOver the last couple of days, the Dacco web site has received a fairly major overhaul as we finally got around to installing the content management system we originally planned to install some time back in September 2003... Not only is the new site much more aesthetically pleasing (at least in our opinion), but it makes adding information to the site much quicker and easier for us, hopefully makes things easier to find for you and, whilst installing the new CMS, we have also sneaked in another 2 new dictionaries. You should now have access not only to Catalan-English dictionaries for beginners and intermediate students but also the corresponding English-Catalan dictionaries which you can find at the top of the left-hand sidebar.
