Huckzilla Scrimmage - Oct. 15, 1994

Scrimmage report

Darkside took a small (I won't mention all of the folks that backed out at the last minute - a few with good reason) team to scrimmage Huckzilla Saturday. The cast of eight included: Jay Barry, Keyne Cheshire, Jeff Garigliano, Geoff Haisty, Emily Larson, Mark Parris, Chris Rodning, and Santosh Rao. We were thrilled to arrive and realize we only had one sub to share playing time with. (Yeah, right.) And, it was windy. What joy! However, the clearing skies and soft fields made things nicer. The fact that Huckzilla only had 8 folks helped too. (A lot of the scores below may be off. I was too involved in the game to keep track.)

The combination of wind and height played to Huckzilla's favor as they were able to get ahead of us by scoring some upwind goals. However, things got strange as both teams started scoring upwind but not downwind. Nevertheless, Huckzilla was up at the half 8-5. Our early attempts at zone were problematic as Huckzilla used their height (some 6-5 guy was visiting - he made Curtis look tiny) to pull down floating passes. We made a mini rally in the second half before losing 15-12.

However, Huckzilla wanted to scrimmage again, this time to 11. They played some zone against us. We didn't have a lot of trouble moving the disk against it but it seemed we always turned the disc over once we got close to the endzone. Huckzilla took the half 6-3. But we weren't done and they were getting tired. Chris continued making amazing layout catches and defensive plays. Santosh made it clear he wanted to play deep and scored the first two points of the second half. Another score tied it at 6-6. Then we were up 7-6. A few points later Huckzilla was ahead 9-8. Then we tied it at 10's and took the lead 11-10. After forcring a turnover, Keyne got the disc to Chris. Chris connected with me up the side line. Geoff Haisty gave a good cut to continue the flow and Jeff blazed up the sideline to receive a wonderful low break-force throw up the line from Geoff for the score and the game.

I think we played well as a team. Calling our first sequence of cuts eliminated clogging and initiated some flow. We were able to break force pretty effectively. Our zone defense improved through out the game and we were effective against their zone as well. I also liked our defensive play as we often forced them to wait for 3rd and 4th cuts before they could get a pass off and often they threw the floaters counting on Curtis to pull them down (we could have used Chip) . Catching and throwing in the wind and some impatience near the endzone were our principal problems. We're going to work on endzone 'O' at practice this week. We all need to just get out and throw (including windy days) as often as possible.

A good day for Darkside.
