Tournament report by Chris Rodning

Straight to Individual highlights

A very brief recap. Anybody can compile more highlights and information as necessary.

[Chris also tends to be rather stream-of-consciousness when he writes these things...]

An absolutely spectacular day for a good tournament in Raleigh. A few teams did not arrive, giving some teams lots of byes to advance through multiple rounds. After a scheduled bye during the first round, took the field against App State, a solid team with nice offensive flow and aggressive defense, who took the game, 13-6. That loss cast us to the bottom bracket for a game against Davidson, who did not come, therefore advancing us to the third round. Played a strong game against Virginia, winning 13-7. Recall that first point which Darkside scored against them in that game, absolutely stunning, picture perfect, smooth, calm, gentle, and yet piercing offense. Advanced Darkside to the fourth round against archrival and nemesis Duke, with a strong cast of characters much improved during the past year, who won a hard fought game 13-8. Would attribute some of our woes to hurried throws, unforced drops, and the occasional clog. Good cheer for the first time Darkside has ever reached Regionals. Pack those proverbial bags.

Individual highlights

Dan Parrish:

Now known as the team Bard. Excellent Lord of the Flies chant. "Kill the Beast, cut its throat, spill the blood." Meanwhile excellent poetic mind, with a penchant for sophisticated and elegant rhyme and meter. Meanwhile, nice patient cuts as a handler and deep.

Geoff Haisty:

Silverback intensity. Amazing defensive layouts, especially against App. nice deep cuts for score, including some nice stuff against Duke. That game had some pivotal catches and throws along the way towards the end zone as well.

Aron Hall:

The Boss. Will emphasize a single highlight. Ran hard playing zone defense against UVA for an entire point, another of those long points in which Darkside gradually weathered their offense and created a turnover. Ran that whole long point, then made a deep cut on offense towards the zone. Defender makes a bid, and Aron makes a bid for an absolutely stunning layout catch for a score of a slight tip. Takes concentration to make visual adjustments while suspended horizontally. good stuff.

Albert Monroe:

Locomotion and intensity. And threw a hammer for a score against Duke.

Carl Erikson:

Intense intense offense defense. Great coverage of Bacote for Duke. Great coverage of "Morrisette" [sandy] for App. Some nice defensive blocks which generated good momentum.

Alan Hoyle:

Some choice throws. Arcing gentle throws just in bounds for scores. Deep hucks. Good play as a deep coming back to generate offensive flow.

Cory Barlow:

Good coverage of handlers on other teams. Meanwhile played well as a handler himself, coolly dumping and swinging.

Clifford Reinhart:

Vertical.

Shane Greene:

Quarterback.

Thanks to Geoff Haisty for organizing the modified departure time due to late knowledge of our scheduled bye in the early round. Thanks to Brian Warshaw for cheers and encouragement. Thanks to Pleiades members Emily Larson, Torie Hilton, Stephanie Moravec, Margo Hasselman for moral and vocal support. A resounding cheer for The Cat in the Hat on the field.

Cheers, Chris.

Mark "The Cat in the Hat" Parris was in Japan for this tournament so we wanted him to be scared as to what actually happened at the tournament.

Subject: Doctor sez...

Doctor sez that my broken leg on the last point of the Duke game will heal just in time for Regionals ... whew! Nice full field hammer to Alan, Bill. I loved it when Andrew started pulling between his legs. But the highlight was when we played 500 to determine the winner of the Virginia game - nice leaps everyone.
