Pleiades is the brainchild of graduate student Emily Larson, who formed the team after two years of playing for Darkside, the original UNC team, now the men's team. We called ourselves Pleiades after a lot of debate and some really bad suggestions (Broadside?!), because of its nickname of Seven Sisters, since each game we play involves seven women on the field together. Unfortunately, we learned just before our first tournament that there's another team in New Jersey with our name. Well, who cares. We live in a better state.
Pleiades and Darkside do a lot together, playing pick-up twice a week in addition to our individual practices, plus going to tournaments and hanging out a lot as a group. Darkside is very supportive of Pleiades and even footed the bill for us to go to open sectionals in Fall 1995, Pleiades' first tournament ever.
At that sectionals our record was 0-7 but we qualified for regionals anyway. Since then we have been to Wilmington's Lioness Tourney, Ultimax, April Fools Fest, William and Mary's Funkengruven and college sectionals, college regionals in Spring 1997, Frostbreaker (Spring Break in Florida!), and many more. All told, our record last spring was 17-12, and counting...
Other Stuff
Pleiades is always recruiting. Please email Jaime or come to practice. Our fall activities will be getting underway soon. We hope to go to a couple tournaments, have lots of fun, and get psyched up and prepared for this season.
Any woman, girl, chick, babe, man trapped in woman's body, female, lady, femme is welcome. You must be a UNC-CH student to come to college tournaments with us, but anyone is welcome to play with us during fall semester and to come to practice. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! We would be happy to teach you. If you want to play an active and fun sport without the pressure and nonsense of varsity status, Ultimate is for you. You'll love it.
Our Bid for Fools Fest
We worked really hard to make Around the World in 80 Hucks for the
April Fools Fest tournament in Fredericksburg. It's a great bid that illustrates
our eclectic history regarding ultimate. Click here
to go through it in the order we made it, or if you've got a crush on one
of us, here's a list of the individual pages. Mark Parris, who has a crush
on all of us, wants a page where he can see all of us at once. Click
here to harass him about it.
