barbecue chicken lovers, take note!
March 7, 2007 on 4:59 pm | In food | 1 Commenttoday i had the *best* barbecue chicken i have had in a long time. i had driven my dad over to henderson, n.c. for eye surgery, and we had time for lunch in between the surgery and the follow-up appointment. i wasn’t thrilled about driving past ruby tuesday’s and cracker barrel (more for the enforced health code cleanliness in the kitchen than for the food). i wasn’t too sure that the dabney drive restaurant was no longer on dabney drive. i wasn’t even sure about the mama’s family-era tables and chairs, or the tiny buffet stand at the far end of the restaurant.
the food, however, made me appreciate this hidden gem of country cookin’ – absolutely phenomenal. falling-off-the-bone-tender chicken in a delicious vinegar and red pepper sauce next to fried flounder and southern vegetable staples, all one could eat. i didn’t even try half the food on the buffet because i went back for more chicken. great to eat barbecue that caters to a working crowd, and isn’t afraid to be more than a little spicy. we left a half an hour later with tingling lips and full tummies.
the dabney drive restaurant is quite a hike from the triangle area of north carolina, but if you’re driving on interstate 85 around lunch or dinner time, pull off at the highway 39 exit in henderson. you’ll see it in the brown-roofed shopping center just south of the interstate. you won’t be disappointed in the lunch buffet, a bargain at $6.
eat well and tip well. the restaurant isn’t that busy since they sold their old building, in the center of town and actually on dabney drive, to an italian family. i never knew about this place, but i hope they stay open.
