believe it can be replaced by a Windows-operated modern music system,

i love it when people get married in my church. they always do it on a saturday afternoon, and the wedding planner, who always treats the sanctuary as a showplace rather than a place of worship, always leaves the church in such a state that it takes me around 45 minutes to get the place ready for service. today i did nothing. as my friend bud has said:

The Altar table is solemnly consecrated in a lengthy service which has its roots in the consecration of the Second Temple … it includes washing the altar, anointing it, sealing grains of incense in five crosses cut into it with hot wax from the paschal candle, lighting a FIRE on it, either directly (in the case of a stone altar) or in a brazier (in the case of a wooden altar) in which is burned cedar chips (in memory of the consecration of Solomon’s Temple), the Five Nails from the Paschal Candle, and the rest of the solemnly-consecrated Holy Oils, wine, and incense used for the anointing and consecrating of the table. Altars are NOT flower-stands.

apparently for yesterday’s newly-married and hopefully happy couple, the altar was a trash bag stand – and the organ bench was a trash can. my pastor’s bible was to be thrown on the floor in the corner of the hallway behind the nave – it didn’t belong anywhere near the pulpit. folding chairs were to be left folded, and stacked sideways in the foyer. the burger king bags and cigarette butts on the front porch were a nice touch.

a few years ago, i would try to balance the church’s sound panel back to some usable state for weeks each time little hands played with it, but couldn’t get the console moved where i wanted it in the first place so that i could get to it during the service. finally i began leaving things broken, so that the minister at the time had to do the service with no microphones for himself or the choir. the console was moved the next week.

under the same M.O., i simply gritted my teeth today and cleaned nothing. it physically hurt to walk past the abuse heaped on the only sanctuary i’ve ever known, the only church i have ever called home. but i am tired of picking up after the mess left by the children, and i absolutely refuse to clean up after the adults, most of them afforded the title only due to their age.

when sherri moore-mott held the pulpit there, i was a believer. since she left i have struggled both with my own faith and the constant temptation to leave and find a real church, now more than ever. the church is again on the campus that i consider my home, and is less than a mile from my parents’ house, so attending there makes it very, very convenient to see my parents each week. now that we’ve switched to a praise-and-worship format i am expected to do less than ever with the salary. but i’ve come to regard my attendance here as a game, to see whether i can be driven away from christianity by the various pastors we’ve had in the past five years, and driven away from playing the organ by the criticisms and insults handed to me by the adults that have passed through.

so far, i’m still winning.

this sunday at 7pm, douglas bush of brigham young will be performing the dedicatory recital on the new klais organ in the first united methodist church of richardson. the instrument’s specifications have set off an argument about the utility and aesthetics of super- and sub-couplers (personally, i side with sebastian and the organ builders, who think they’re works of the devil), but i would still be honored to have such an instrument installed in my church.

of course, the klais organ isn’t the only wonderful thing from richardson, texas that i’d love to have at my daily disposal. and no, i don’t mean her.

i’m currently recovering from a whirlwind weekend of old college friends, weddings, disasters resulting from weddings, and reminders of a life gone by. samira and her friend justin came for matt carroll’s wedding, steve’s brother jeff was in town to “visit” (i’m so southern) and go to football games and state fairs, and sunday was homecoming at the orphanage.

observations:

pre-digital electronic organs are painful to everyone, not just the organists behind the console and the musicians in the congregation

i can play praise songs by ear, segue into a traditional hymn, and continue into an appropriate offering — all in Gb and on 4 hours of sleep.

one can be close to a couple for literally years and not pick up on things they try to cover up, as long as they keep things covered well enough. my jaw hit the floor several times saturday night but i am grateful that this person trusted me enough to open up to me, and consider me a source of support. i can’t believe what she’s been through, all without anyone to help her, or even anyone to listen.

civil disobedience pays. the alma mater, one of the few traditions left at my church, was cut from this year’s homecoming ceremony. feeling more allegiance to the 100 or so alumni in attendance than to the people who made the decision to cut the song from the service, i dutifully played it for the postlude. several people stopped me after church and told me they wish the alma mater had been announced, as they would have liked it sung. i’m glad that anyone even noticed.

in other news, work is calming down. the server moves went well and not-so-well, ranging from tidy and efficient to glacial and totally bungled, but in any case they’re done for the most part. we’ve spent the past few weeks tracking down problems resulting from the upheaval, and i’ve spent the better part of last week ironing out the last of the leftover configuration problems. next up are slightly more aggressive system changes, but now we have the luxury of taking them one at a time, once we’ve had the opportunity to think things through and plan thoroughly. hopefully we won’t be flying by the seat of our pants again for quite some time.

personal life. i have had almost none. i hope to have more of one now that i’m not working every hour that i’m awake. why do i only like people who are jerks to me? why can’t i be happy with what is available to me? why can’t i just pick up and move to florida or california, marry into money and be a kept man? i’m not giving up hope on that one just yet.
in any case, i’m always happy to have friends in town, or go stay with friends out of town, because it reminds me that i do have friends. i have friends here, of course, but none with whom i am particularly close or bond with tightly. after a year or two of doggedly convincing myself that i’m happy here, at present i can’t convince myself that i can be happy without leaving the triangle area.

last week in review:

monday: two permanent crowns squashed onto my molars. actually not that bad.

tuesday: skipped out on work a little early, because i just couldn’t wait any longer to head to nag’s head

wednesday/thursday/friday: offline and out of touch. books, beach and some good college friends i hadn’t seen in years. so wonderful.

saturday: back to the triangle for everything raleigh has to offer. a tentative possibility seems to go well, then falls flat. early to bed.

sunday: off to church refreshed, but not ready for one of the childrens’ depressing account of the previous day’s annual celebration. no matter how timeless and steadfast some traditions may seem…
came back home half-expecting a promised call, and got it at an unsurprisingly late enough hour to render the call pointless. no, i’m not a cynic, i’m pragmatic. and i was never very good with a yo-yo. (don’t try to play me out! don’t try to play me out!)

onward to this week: we set up our new netapp filer! now to iron out a couple of residual problems not related to the new filer, and we’ll be ready to synch data!

got a repeat of the unexpected late phone call: “hey, got your message, on my way to coffee so i’ll call you later or maybe tomorrow… have a good night!” at least have the decency not to call if you don’t want to. it makes it so much easier on the person you don’t really want to call.

on a much lighter note, pope benedict xvi rocks! or doesn’t rock, i should say. r.s. chamberlin had them all wrong!
i especially appreciate benedict’s comments after overhearing a conversation at my church before service started yesterday. we have a relatively new pastor who was hired specifically because the service didn’t connect with the children. the service is about them. we need to meet them where they’re at. bye bye hymnal, hello powerpoint. we’re mostly praise-n-worship and had a drummer for some time, until he went home for good, leaving the set dismantled to one side of the altar. one of the older boys can’t wait to set the drums back up so he can learn to play. one of the other older boys pointed out that the drums were too loud in the church, that they were giving people in the congregation headaches, and that they would complain. the pastor smiled and replied, “it’s not about them.”
