Often called the "King of Instruments," the Pipe Organ encompasses a wide range of instruments from small, intimate reed organs to full-powered instruments designed on for the scale of a concert hall. The organ's complexity and steep learning curve require something of a dedication to the instrument and the music to truly appreciate it. This sizeable requirement coupled with a decline in classical music listeners have left the future of the instrument in question.

The advent of the Internet, however, has given a venue for most any expression to anyone with a computer and a network connection, and the pipe organ is no different. A small but vibrant core of organ enthusiasts have set up various shops in cyberspace: Organbuilders advertising their services to repair the instruments, church organists hoping to network with other musicians to swap music and ideas, and organ evangelists hoping to renew waning interest in the instrument. With this site I hope to offer a collection of the higher-quality organ resources available on the Internet, in four distinct sections:

  • How do they work? -- an overview of how organs create sound, and how organists combine these sounds into music.
  • Organ examples -- pages about some prominent instruments representative of different styles of organs, and several organ builders who will construct new instruments or repair existing installations.
  • Mailing Lists and Discussion Boards -- resources to interact with organists or people interested in pipe organs, worldwide.
  • Concert Links -- resources listing organ recitals and concerts, both one-time and ongoing.
Google.com's Pipe Organ Web Directory is an excellent meta-directory of pipe organ resources. The sites listed are not organized, but each facet of intrest regarding pipe organs is represented in this list.
