monday awesomeness…

Check out this awesome piece of artwork. Take equal parts of 2d fighters of yesteryear and pop culture (”You’re entering a world of pain!”), throw in tons of nasty gore, and a little bit of nudity (also nasty) and you get Pirate Baby’s Cabana Battle Street Fight 2006. Seriously fun to watch and makes me wish someone would actually make a game like it. I’d play it.

It makes me think: I know we all get caught up in the glitz of the 3d rendering and all that, but someone (besides capcom) should get back into making some 2d stuff. I’m all for making games “experiences” but what about making it a game? Scroll that sucker left to right (or bottom to top) and let’s see who can get the highest score in the arcade…

All right, this is just awesome. Jack Pendley’s av1d. Take odd looking (mostly) Japanese commercials and add your own subtitles. Brilliant. So many good ones, but I think this one is my favorite so far.

Makes you wonder if Japanese folks sit around a make fun of how funny our commercials look…

I think I have an idea for my master’s paper…

claim what’s yours…

Claim IDOne of the major benefits of working at ibiblio and studying at UNC SILS is that you meet interesting people doing interesting things. Fred Stutzman is one of those interesting people. The interesting thing he’s working on right now, along with the equally interesting Terrell Russell, is called claimID.com

Here’s the idea. After you’ve been roaming the net for while, you might end up with all these works that you’ve created or worked on, all in different spots. You link them from your own homepage, sure, but you want a way to really claim that they are works that you did or are about you. A single place where someone can visit and can confirm that, yes, you are the Dan Lucas that wrote that awful review of the awful movie “Alien Beach Party Massacre.” That’s what claimID is for - an easy way for you to keep track of what is yours and stuff that’s about you.

Neat stuff. I do wonder if it will really take off but I hope it will. Judge for yourself and ask to be a tester.

Lyceum logoSo let’s say you’re some crazy system admin of a web server somewhere and you get all these crazy requests from your users to give them a blog - preferably WordPress. Well that’s cool but you don’t really want to give everyone access to php and mysql. What do you do? Well my friend, you walk on over to ibiblio and pick up a copy of Lyceum - a derivative of WordPress that lets you set up one installation and have multiple blogs. Ain’t life grand? Well, okay, it’s not grand yet as it’s just a beta test right now… but it will be. And you could help us out by being a tester. If you do, I hear that JJB will dance for you…
