kings of power 4 billion %

Monday, March 24th, 2008

Almost two years ago I talked about Paul Robertson’s Pirate Baby’s Cabana Battle Street Fight 2006, an animated short made in the style of side-scrolling 2D fighter. Now you know that was chock full of ultra-violent awesomeness, but what if I were to tell you that Paul Robertson is back with even more eye candy? Candy that not only brings the same side-scrolling animation and blood, but even more pop culture references, religious references, and a fantastic sound track?

Well, Mr. Robertson has gone and done it. Check out KINGS OF POWER 4 BILLION %! (warning… this really isn’t for the squemish. Yeah, it’s just 2D sprite violence, but it’s pretty gory even for 2D sprites… especially the final battle).

Trailer below.

Can’t believe I haven’t posted this yet. That Subliminal Kid, DJ Spooky is coming to UNC (and Duke apparently) to give a demonstration and lecture. It’ll be in the Great Hall of the Carolina Union on February 8th, 3-5pm.

And as it’s partially ibiblio event, I made a poster…

cleaning the bubble

They just placed 3,000+ images on Flickr copyright free (or at least have no known copyright). They want folks to tag there stuff (good old folksomonies) but for me it means I have even more photos to use on the front page banner.

taking the late evening train to florida…

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

that’s not quite as catchy.

I am going down to southern Florida for a few days though and to save money (compared to flying) and sanity (compared to driving) Dawne and I are taking the train. I’ve got all my books and movies ready for the 19-hour long trip but it occurred to me that I would be even more content if I could just use my laptop for the whole trip.

Which made me wonder, do US passenger trains even have wifi? And if not, why? A quick google search reveals that people have been asking this question for years. There seems to be some Amtrak stations up in the Northeast that have T Mobile hotspots, but nothing on the trains. This boggles the mind. I know that the train business is in dire straits and all, but adding the ability to work while I sit on the train would make the decision between flying regionally or taking the train simple. Sure, you’d get to your destination faster on a plane (security hassles notwithstanding) but you’d be actually getting stuff done on a train. What busy business person wouldn’t take that opportunity? Sounds like a good way to draw some of those passengers away from the cheap-o airlines…

Regardless, I’m still taking my laptop with me on the train if for nothing else the abilities to watch a movie on something other than an ipod screen, but man I would love the chance to play online games for 19 hours…

Burt Freakin' Reynolds

I expressed my doubts that the Uwe Boll directed Dungeon Siege film was real, but no: it most certainly exists. It even has a site and a trailer, though it’s missing Burt Reynolds. What it does have is a more-than-just-a-passing resemblance to Lord of the Rings. I mean, if I didn’t know better I’d say Uwe straight up stole some of the models and story boards from LoTR.

Still baffled why people give this man money to make movies…

are up at our site at DawneandDan.us.

Back from Maui…

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

All right, the wedding is done, the honeymoon is over and I’m ready to rock some web dev face. Just after I recover from the jet lag. Some notes from the trip…

  • Dallas/Ft. Worth airport rocks (though I hear you don’t want to be there during bad weather).
  • Phoenix airport sucks (future airport designers… design your airport so I don’t have to go through security again to catch a connecting flight and make sure transportation between terminals is obvious).
  • Whether heat is “dry” or not does not matter when it’s 107 degrees.
  • Starting from the east coast around noon and arriving in Maui around 10-11pm is perfect as you can just go to sleep and be use to Hawaii time by the time you wake up.
  • This does not work in the other direction.
  • Maui is gorgeous.
  • Maui is also expensive, especially orange juice
  • The food is delicious. If you go, check out Io for something expensive and Aloha Mixed Plate for something cheap. A friend of mine who got married and also went to Hawaii a couple of weeks before I did loved David Paul’s Lahaina Grill. All those places are in Lahaina in West Maui.
  • Best place I ate at in Makena (where I stayed)? The poolside bar and a grill on the side of the road called the Makena Grill. It’s hard to miss the second one. Just keep driving South until you see a big grill and a white board that quotes Tony Hawk as saying it was the best place to eat in Makena.
  • Worst place I ate at? The lounge in the hotel.
  • Pick up a good guide book. Dawne and I used Frommer’s.
  • If you want to be kinda remote, Makena, in south Maui, is pretty good. Lahaina is really the commercial tourist town and Kihei is a better family trip town (for the money).
  • Regardless of where you stay, you’ll be driving to visit everywhere else.
  • Drive The Road to Hana (Hana Highway). Absolutely gorgeous drive, beautiful sites, lots of curves, and you’ll be amazed that it took you three hours to drive 55 miles (that is if you don’t stop every ten minutes to see another site).
  • It’s freaky to stand in the middle of acre after acre of black lava rock.
  • Being able to sleep with the doors open is awesome.
  • Sitting on a beach and doing nothing is also awesome.
  • Myna birds that like to argue with each other at sunrise are not awesome.

Well that’s enough for now I suppose… lots more stuff to go over… lots of pics to show. Man I still wish I was there…

NO death in the family…

Friday, June 1st, 2007

not really, but I’m testing something hold on.

edit: Sorry, sorry. But you may have seen this page where you can put an rss feed onto lolcats. Simon Spero and I where trying to figure out if there was any logic behind the choosing or the pictures or was it just random, so we tried to trigger something with the word death. Not sure how I let Simon use my own blog to do that with, but so it goes.

Again my apologies.

… kicks tires, peels off chipping paint from hood…

Yeah something’s gotta change around here. Looks like a redesign is in order. Let’s see if I can fit it in between a class, assignments, a trip to Hawaii, and, oh yeah, a wedding. Plus there’s certainly more designs, flyers, and even a logo to be made. Gah. Remember when summers used to be laid back?

Some interesting ibiblio related stuff going on –

First, Lyceum just got a new release. This one includes some bug fixes and a few features. I mean you are using Lyceum for your multi-user, multi-blogging needs right? Right. One of these days, I’m gonna make a Lyceum theme…

Last, Paul Jones got mentioned and linked at Boing Boing for pointing to a disturbing little piece Folkstreams put on YouTube. Unfortunately, they got his address wrong and it points to some squatter. Oh well, enjoy the Decomposition of Baby Pigs anyway.

just a lil’ dude…

Friday, January 5th, 2007

I’m not usually in the business of pimping TV shows, but I had to say something about Afro Samurai:

Go watch it.

Anime-style cartoon starring Samuel Jackson as a wandering samurai (wonder if he’s ronin… hmm) looking to avenge the killing of his father. He wears the headband of “Number 2″ (which apparently means he’s the only one who can kill whoever is wearing “Number 1″) and he has a huge, flowing afro.

Yeah, cliché story but like a Quentin Tarantino movie you’re really going more for the style than the story. Nicely animated with a soundtrack produced by Wu-Tang’s the RZA. If you can stand the fact that they are showing this on Spike TV then you should definitely give it a go. I’d say more, but it’s not like Spike is paying me or anything.

I give up…

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

Not on this blog (though you wouldn’t know it by the lack of updates), but on trying to stay up on games in general. There’s just too much to pay attention to these days. I don’t have the money to buy a Wii or a XBox 360, but I don’t have the time to play with them anyway. Even if I was considering a PS3, I certainly don’t have the cash to pick up an HDTV anytime soon to make use of it (so far, Blu-Ray seems to be its main advantage). And I still have five games sitting around waiting for me to be done with class projects.
So that’s it. I’m not even going to worry anymore what the hot new release is and try to remember what the hell its name was when I finally finish the last six games I want to try out. When I want something new to play, I’ll just lurk around the net and see what people are talking about that day, because I can’t freaking stand it anymore. There are just too many things to play and too little time.

Sigh.
