Living History Program:        Offered September and October; March and April (Thursdays and Fridays) Geared toward 2nd through 5th grades.

 

The program begins with the film Sarah’s Farm to orient the students to the site and illustrate what a child’s life was like in the 19th century.  Students will then participate in hands-on activities including food preservation/butter churning, archaeology, townball, 19th-century fashion show, or a tour of the 1852 Duke home and/or the tobacco history museum. Each activity takes thirty minutes. Groups may also reserve the picnic area for a picnic lunch. Limit of four classes or 100 students per day; the maximum number of activities, including the orientation film, is four. 

 

Guided Tours :    Offered year round. All age levels.

 

During this hour and a half visit, students view the 17-minute orientation film Legacy of the Golden Leaf, then tour the 1852 Duke home and the tobacco history museum. Groups may also reserve the picnic area for a picnic lunch. Limit of three classes or 75 students per day.

 

Life on a Farm:  Offered year round.  Kindergarten through 1st   grade

 

During this one-hour visit, students will talk about the animals and crops raised on a farm in the 1800s, hear The Little Red Hen read aloud, and tour the Duke family’s 1852 home, where they can compare their home to the Duke family’s farmhouse.

 

Christmas Traditions and Celebrations:       Offered first two weeks in December;  For preschool through 1st grade

 

A one-hour tour of the Homestead detailing the celebration of Christmas in 1870 Piedmont North Carolina is provided for the students. Costumed interpreters explain the decorations, food, and gifts typically shared during the season. Children may sample homemade gingerbread and popcorn popped over the fire and may make an ornament to take home. Limit of two classes or 50 students per hour.

 

(There is a suggested donation of $1 per child for all programs.)

Herb, Garden, and Craft Festival: June 7, 2008 , 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

 

Tobacco Harvest and Hornworm Festival: September 6, 2008 , 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

 

An Evening at the Homestead : October 18, 2008 , 2 p.m. until 6 p.m.

 

Christmas by Candlelight: December 5th and 12th, 2008, 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.
