Rye the grain, used for overwintering green manure has been shown to have

suppressant (sp) effects on the following crop -alleliopathic is the term
I think. Some crops are more sensitive, lettuce being one. I would give the
tilled under rye a good 3 weeks to 1 month to decompose before planting anthing
or transplanting anything into the ground enriched by it.

$ for $ and pond for pound the best green manure I have ever used is
Sweet Clover. Melilotus alba. Good soil bldg. character, easy to establish
tolerant of nasty hot and cold temp. as well as drought or rain - a nice
Green Manure. Lots of N too when you plow it down
