I seem to recall someone asking about sources for mushroom spawn, etc.
From _Mushrooms: Wild and Edible_ by Vincent Marteka (W.W. Norton &Co, 1980,
paperback 1985, $10.95) comes this list of sources:
Far West Fungi, P.O. Box 1333, Goleta, California 93116

Florida Mycology Research Center, P.O. Box 8104, Pensacola, FL 32505

Fungi Perfecti, P.O. Box 7634, Olympia, WA 98507

The Kinoko Company, P.O. Box 6425, Oakland, CA 94621

Kurtzman's Mushroom Specialties, 815 Harbor Way #12, Richmond, CA
                94804

        Mushroompeople, P.O. Box 158, Inverness, CA 94937

        Myco-Man, G.F. Vulker Inc., P.O Box 6310, Hamilton, Ontario
                L9C 6L9, Canada

Sohn's Oak Forest Mushrooms, 610 S. Main Street, Box 20,
                Westfield, WI 53964

Western Biologicals, P.O. Box 1253 Station A, Vancouver,
                British Columbia, V6C 2T1, Canada

Dr. Yoo Farm, P.O. Box 290, College Park, MD 20740

DISCLAIMER: I've never used any of these companies. Some of them may
not exist anymore, but someone is going to have to waste a stamp to
find out. Good luck.

The book mentioned above is subtitled, "A seasonal guide to the
most easily recognized mushrooms". It does, however, have a few things to
say about growing your own (pp245-255), most of which involves buying spawn.
But it does mention making spore emulsions and innoculating tree roots,
dead wood, manure piles, old leaves, etc. There are some references
given, most of which are so old or esoteric that you'd need a good
research librarian to help you track them down. I can post them if
there's enough interest.
