Describe GettingStarted here.
- To edit any page click on the Edit Text link at the bottom of the page. If you do that right now, and look at the examples, it will help you understand.
- You get italics by surrounding words with two underscores on either side like this. Example: Brodiaea elegans
- You get bold text by using an asterisk on either side of the word or phrase. Example: Pacific Bulb Society
- You get bullets by using a plus + at the start of the line.
- You can separate paragraphs with an extra blank line. Example
I am a paragraph.
I am a paragraph too. We're just very small paragraphs.
What ever is typed after three percentage symbols (%) will appear on the next line.
Example: Name of plant
url of plant- You can get two horizontal lines to divide a section with four or more minus signs like this:
- Two exclamation marks at the start of a line makes a medium heading. Example:
Pacific Bulb Society
- To link to pages outside the Wiki, you can just type in the URL and Wiki will link it for you:
http://www.nytimes.com/ To add a new page to Wiki, all you have to do is come up with a meaningful title, capitalize all the words and StringThemTogetherLikeThis. Wiki automatically recognizes it as a wikilink. Alternatively, you can put anything into square brackets.
Example: This is a wikipage link
- If the wikipage does not exist yet a question mark appears after the link, inviting you to create the page. Then you can go ahead and ClickTheQuestionMark? at the end of your new hyperlink, and the Wiki will give you a window for making the new page.
How do I find our wiki?
http://www.ibiblio.org/pbs/pbswiki/index.php/HomePage
How do I upload a photograph file to the wiki?
On our home page there is a section UploadFile. Click on it. You can go also go directly to it by using this URL:
http://www.ibiblio.org/pbs/pbswiki/index.php/UploadFile
The Browse key will allow you to find where on your computer you have the picture file you want to upload. Name your file something descriptive so it will be immediately clear what it is. Do not use spaces in your name. You can use hyphens or underlines to separate genus and species or just write both words together. Be sure to include the jpg extension if you are uploading an image. Find the file and push upload. Please try to keep your file size below 100 kb.
After the file has been transferred from your computer to the ibiblio server you will be given the location URL for it. Make a note of this.
What do I do after I have uploaded the file?
If you want the people on the PBS list to know that you have posted a picture please send an email to the list telling them about your picture and including the URL you made a note of.
If it is an image of a bulb, copy it directly into the Photographs and Information wiki page or the wiki page created for that genus. Place the URL on the page alphabetically by the name of the plant. See below for how to add information to a page.
Do not use brackets around the URL file when you add it to our page so it will become a wiki link on our page.
As you add your new URL to the wiki page for PBS please credit the person who took the picture and briefly tell what it is, country of origin, whether photographed in the wild or garden, and other brief information that might assist someone who is interested in growing it.
I uploaded a file and it has a question mark next to it. I can't see it when I click on it. What have I done?
If you own a Mac you may not have a file extension included in the name of your picture. You will need to add .jpg (be sure you put a dot in between your title and jpg) in order for the program to know what it is if it is a jpg file. Be sure that you do not add more than that as even an extra space on the end will make it unreadable.
How do I get rid of a file with a question mark or one that is too big to display properly?
Please contact the pbs adminstrators and alert them about your file so they can remove it for you.
How do I add information to an existing page?
To edit any page click on Edit at the bottom of every page. After you do this you will see a box of helpful edting tips listed on the bottom. There is more detailed information on editing in How to Use This Wiki on the pbs wiki home page with examples that you can view in the edit mode to see how to do it. Some of things you may use the most are listed here:
You make italics by surrounding words with two underscores on either side. Example: Brodiaea elegans becomes Brodiaea elegans
You make bold text by using an asterisk on either side of the word or phrase. Example: Pacific Bulb Society becomes Pacific Bulb Society
You can add a blank line to separate text by just leaving a blank line.
What ever is typed after three percentage symbols (%) will appear on the next line. Example: " Picture of flower photographed by name
url of plant" will have the information on the first line and the url on the line below
Before saving what you have edited you can check how it looks by clicking on Preview. If it does not look like you want it to look, you can change it until it does. Always click on the Save when you have finished your work.
How do I add a new page to the wiki?
To add a new page to Wiki, all you have to do is to type on any existing page a meaningful title, capitalize all the words and StringThemTogetherLikeThis. Wiki automatically recognizes this as a wiki link. If you think you will ever want to send someone the url for this page it is best to do it this way if your page name has several words in it. Alternatively, you can put anything into square brackets, but if you do, the spaces in the url will then be replaced by %20 in the url for that page.
Example: This is a wiki page? If you send the url it will look like this. This%20is%20a%20wiki%20page?
After you have typed this in and saved it on the page you are editing, if the wikipage does not exist yet a question mark appears before the first word of the proposed wikipage, inviting you to create the page. When you click on the question mark the Wiki will give you a window for making the new page.
Type in your text, save your work and it is done.
I am adding several different photographs of the same genus. How do I add a new page to the wiki for that genus?
Following the instructions above, click on Edit on the bottom of the Photographs and Information page. Type in the genus name you want in alphabetical order and surround it in brackets. For example: Crocus? After you have typed this in and saved it, click on the question mark next to the new genus page you have just added. Type in your text for the page and add your URLS and information, save your work and it is done. If there is another image from someone else for this genus on the Photographs and Information page, you will need to edit that page, copy the URL and text for that page and edit the new page and paste this information in the new page. When you are sure that you have done this successfully, go back to the previous page and edit it again and remove the information that you have relocated.
How do I add a link for a web page that I think would be helpful to have on a wiki page?
Click on the edit button for the page you wish to add the link to. Simply type in the URL and save and Wiki will link it for you. You can check it to be sure it works before you exit.
I would like to have a page of my own so I can keep track of all the photographs I have added to the wiki. How do I do this?
When you add your first photograph or alternatively later when you are in the edit mode, place brackets around your name. Name? After you have saved this action there will be a ? in front of your name. Click on it and you will be able to write anything you want about yourself for your own page. Save your work. If you click on your page, you will be able to see everything that is linked to it by clicking on BACK LINKS on the very top of the page.
