I have to agree with Jeff - the regular Real Goods catalog has become 
just like so many other yuppie "green" catalogs, like Seventh Generation, 
etc.  The Solar Living Sourcebook is the one you want to get, unless you 
only want to see toiletries, notepaper, and toys.  I have to say though 
that some of the notecards they sell are very nice, but I'm biased 
because my sister-in-law sells her designs through EarthCare Paper, which 
was recently bought by Real Goods (and thus their products now show up in 
the Real Goods catalog).  This is a cottage industry for my brother and 
his wife, who live on a small farm in Pennsylvania.  Shameless plug - if

This seems unrealistic to me. If you put the shadecloth behind the glazing,
and look at it thru the glazing, it will just look black. Period. I've
tried this. There may be some sags or fades, but you won't see them much.

OTOH, I just hung a temporary 16' tall x 32' wide single piece of 80% black
shadecloth over the front of my house, which faces the road, 100' away. It
looks a bit odd from the road, but it keeps the house cool, since it covers up
the 512 ft^2 Trombe wall and all of the windows in that wall. The view from
the inside is fine. Attenuated, but clear, with a little moire pattern,
like looking through a window screen. Or two.

I suppose so. One hopes they would be concerned with safety and health energy
savins, vs. consumed by aesthetics. If not, that should be changed.

One nice little book is _Sun Angles for Design_, by Robert Bennett, PE
and architect. The book is mainly has lots of graphs that help to calculate
overhangs for shading, but it also has lots of nice solar house pictures.

Cynwyd, PA 19004.

Aarne Koutaniemi of Finland asked about books on solar power for houses.

I would suggest that there are probably people in Scandanavia who could give
you better advice than those of us in the U.S. Having lived for a number of
years in Holland and Germany, I am also aware that U.S. books tend to be
quite expensive when purchased in Europe. (Also, The European Commission has
been actively supporting research in solar applications for many years, and
has a fairly extensive publishing program. Unfortunately I haven't been able
to find an address for you this evening.)

Several people from this group have presented papers at solar energy
conferences in the U.S.; they seem to be quite well informed, and obviously

that they could put you in contact with knowledgeable people in Finland and
Sweden, in the areas of photovoltaics as well as passive solar house design.

For example, you might ask Prof. Hestnes for a copy of the paper:
"Design Guidelines for Passive Solar Low Energy Houses in Scandanavian
Climates", presented at the 13th National Passive Solar Conference in
Cambridge, Mass. USA, 20-24 June 1988. Perhaps they have a more recent paper,
as well, which would of use to you in Finland.

If your interest is specifically for photovoltaics, you have a company in
Finland, NAPS, or Neste Advanced Power Systems, which manufactures and sells
PV modules in many countries around the world, including the U.S. NAPS is a
subsidiary of Neste Oy, located, I believe, at:

Another good book 

"Low Cost Solar Heaters for Your Home"  By Tom Rentz, a somewhat 
longwinded quinquagenarian primer on solar energy, 1978, Hawkes 
Publishing, SLC, Utah, describes in laymans terms
how to build your own solar heater. Somewhat outdated, but still has a 
lot of good ideas. Should be able to find at libraries in SLC, and there
are a few thousand copies out there somewhere (currently out of print, 
sorry). 

But yes, Robert quotes some good ideas here. And the rock walls in his 
home are a good heat storage device. Now, try this on a home that does 
not have a south facing wall, or where the sun shines only in a certain 
inconvenient location in the yard. This is more of a challenge, but a 
blower or fan can transport the heated air quite well via an insulated 
air duct. 

Storage, that's another problem. Especially if the house is already 
constructed, and it has no thermal mass to take advantage of. However, 
low cost thermal masses are beneath your feet. A little ingenuity and low 
cost insulation can work here.
