I think you are paying too much for MREs (Meals Refused by Ethiopians). This is from my archives and is about 2 years old, but hey, it looks like a better list than anything posted here so far. I think you'll like it. Prices: $35 for a case of 12, or $135 for a case of 50. I got 2 cases, and so far, they have been superb. Pack-Away Food Co. P.O. Andy Fingerhut] [review by Ken Seger, 30 Aug 1990, from Survivalism message board on Ken's Survivalist BBS] They have a wide variety of can packed goods plus a unique survival food that stores well in under hot conditions (ideal for car trunks where many storage foods like MREs would rot within a month or two). Spartan Supply P.O. Box 310 Hixson, TN 37343 800-251-3904 [message by Ken Seger, 10 May 1988, from Survivalism message board on Ken's Survivalist BBS] If those are real Mag-Lites, that is a good price. One of the best prices I have ever seen on the AA Mag-Lites was from Spartan Supply, catalog $3 and worth it. You had to buy 6, but they were the AA Mag-lite with lanyard, 2-AA cells, pocket clip, + lense cover with clear, yellow and red lenses. The 3 lenses fit into the lense cover (which is hexagonal to prevent rolling) and is a friction fit so you can change from clear to red in a second. Indiana Camp Supply P.O. Andy Fingerhut] [review by Ken Seger, 26 Apr 1988, from Survivalism message board on Ken's Survivalist BBS] The LIVE FREE meeting that I was at this last weekend was on medical skills. Much of the meeting was lectures by Dr. William Forgey who has written several books for survivalists, outdoorsmen, long distance canoers, etc. His company, Indiana Camp Supply, stocks many books and medical as well as other supplies. The main point he made was that the type of treatment that you give immediately depends on the time and type of higher level medical care later. You would treat a situation differently if you were A. just stopping the bleeding/splinting/etc. to take the person to a fully equipped hospital a few minutes or hours away, B. doing the same thing but then taking several days or weeks to get back to medical facilities, or C. doing the best you can since additional medical care won't be available for months, years, or ever. This has great variation particularly in something like wound closure where different levels of sophistication are so varied. Their catalog is a 12 page list of items with a few pictures. Their prices on MRE's and Israeli gas masks are legendary. Excellent sources for parts and accessories for the popular weapons, lots of military manuals, and lots of small needed items at good prices. They have the best prices I've found on Cyalume sticks, signal mirrors, compasses and other like items. Service is prompt. They run ads in American Survival Guide frequently. They do not have a huge variety, or a fancy catalog. They concentrate on specific areas and do a good job in those areas. [review by Andy Fingerhut, 9 Jun 1992] I ordered a free catalog from them. It is 16 pages long and the first page has the following phrase printed eneath their logo: "Those who beat their swords into plowshares will plow for those who do not." They do not sell firearms, but if you have a military firearm, this looks like the place to go for everything you need to keep that firearm in good condition. Their catalog contains the following categories of items: Firearms accessories, maintenance equipment, and manuals: M-1 Garand Accessories, .30 Caliber Maintenance Equipment, M-14/M1A Accessories 7.62 NATO, .45 Automatic Colt Pistol, .30 Carbine M-1 Accesories, M-16/AR 15 Accessories, .22/.223 Maintenance Equipment, Mini 14 Accessories, Stainless Steel Bore Brushes, Cotton Bore Swabs, Bronze Bore Brushes, Shotgun Brushes, Shotgun Bore Swabs, Cotton Cleaning Patches, Ear Plugs, Industrial Surplus, Wholesale Sales, Military Weapon Slings, Sierra Supply Super Savers, Military Stripper Clips, G.I. They also sell several survivalist books and videos, and miscellaneous supplies. Out of date order form in Execunet database file 079. [review by Ken Seger, 13 Aug 1988, from Survivalism message board on Ken's Survivalist BBS] If you've read Kearny's NWSS 1987 you know that this supplier is the lowest place in the country to purchase canned dried milk. In addition to the great buy on milk they have a series of survival kits starting at $35 for a minor one person kit to $290 for a 4 person 3 day kit. The kits are well thought out and incorporate some excellent items. They sell individual items from the kits at good prices as well. An EXCELLENT item that I have not seen elsewhere is their water & sanitation kits. This kit has a metalized plastic bag with built-in tap that can be used with stackable cardboard boxes for water storage (the bags are NOT gaseous permeable so the water can't be contaminated by fumes and odors) which can be used for either water storage/transport or expedient toilet. This is $30 for 5 - 5 gallon units + 100 gallon capacity disinfectant. They also sell an EXCELLENT video on preparedness that was chosen by The American Civil Defense Association and is $32. They also have a newsletter. [review by Ken Seger, 30 Aug 1990, from Survivalism message board on Ken's Survivalist BBS] These people have great prices on a variety of items and have always treated me wonderfully. It is run by John & Judy Wadsworth, the people that put out the video Practical Preparedness that is sold via them or TACDA. Mentioned in Execunet database files 009 and 097. SI Outdoor, Food & Equipment This company has been taken over by another named "Out N Back". See their listing. Out N Back (ONB) (used to be known as SI Outdoor) 1797 S. State St. Orem, UT 84058 800-533-7415 [above information last validated in June 1992] To get catalog, send $1.00 (check payable to Out N Back) and a note requesting a catalog (with your address on it) to address above. [review by Andy Fingerhut in May 1992] Out N Back's April-June 1992 newsletter contained the following categories of items, usually with several types of each: tents, sleeping bags, cyalume light sticks, utensils, water purifiers and filters, military backpacks and clothing, ammo cans, baja shirts, garden seeds, MRE's, other long term storage foods, hand crank rechargable radios, grain mills, blankets, first aid kits, generators, knives, electric stunners, and pepper spray (for self defense). [review by Ken Seger, 14 Aug 1988, from Survivalism message board on Ken's Survivalist BBS] A reasonable source for a wide variety of items. SI is probably the largest survival mail order supplier around. They have the widest selection of products of any single supplier. Their catalogs are monthly 32 page two color magazines that only cover a portion of their product lines. Most items have a paragraph extolling the virtues of the item. If you want to do One-stop-shopping, SI is for you (if you collect a few months of catalogs). Please note however that most items can be purchased elsewhere for slightly lower prices IF you don't mind spending many hours looking through dozens of other catalogs. Buying many items from one location with slightly higher prices will sometimes be cheaper than multiple purchases from multiple places due to shipping charges savings. Their prices on books is as good as anyplace and better than most if you order several books to get their book discount. I would not purchase any radiation or shelter equipment from them. Their meters tend to be odd-ball reconditioned stuff. You can purchase an Alcor or Guillory that is brand new and EMP hardened for less. Occasionally some of their rarer items are out and out rip offs. Example, the hand cranked 300CFM air blower they were selling for something like $185(!?). Now that is better than buying the same thing from GJBC for $245, but is a quite a spread from the $19 you could get it from Master Mechanic as noted in the FIGHTING CHANCE newsletter (July 87) or DIRECTIONS (Live Free's newsletter) (Dec. 87). Service is good, they have a 800-533-7415 credit card call-in line. PS. Everything is always on "sale" and it's you "last chance to buy it at this price". Example #2, their price for the Israeli Gas mask is over twice the price for same thing from Sierra Supply. However, they do have good prices on many items and I have bought from them myself. Steve's Surplus & Medical Supply (S. J. Pedergnana, Jr.) P.O. Box 1062 Oak Park, IL 60304 [results of attempted contact in May 1992 by Andy Fingerhut] Area code for Oak Park, IL is 708 Information at 708-555-1212 does not have a phone number for the name in the address above. Called information again and asked for Steve Pedergnana. There was a Mary Pedergnana, but the number was unpublished. [review by ?] A very interesting source for survival supplies. The thing that make Pedergnana's different is that he CLEARLY differentiates between what is military surplus and what is commercial (made in Taiwan, Bangledesh, etc). Many items that LOOK like military are cheapo imitations that are WAY lower in quality. Steve's catalog is 6 sheets folded (24 page) one color with brief descriptions of the item. 18 pages are real surplus and 3 pages are clearly labeled commercial products. If you send extra money, Steve will call you and answer any question you have on any aspect of the materials and refund any money not used. He can get just about anything you need so if it is not in the catalog, have him call you and he can advise you whether he can get it and at what price. 4 pages clothing, 2 pages survival gear, 3 pages back packs and field gear, 4 pages of medical stuff, and the rest various. His catalog is $1.00. His prices on the items he has is about as low as you will find ANYWHERE and he charges only shipping costs unlike some places that have a fixed cost of shipping PER ITEM no matter how much you buy! A very useful place that is not advertised much. Micro Information Concepts Dallas, TX [review by Randy Barnhart, 28 Feb 1987, from Ken's Survivalist BBS] I'm sure somebody has already mentioned this, but for safety in duplication, I'll mention it again. There's nothing like microfiche for survival books you might want to bring with you when it all comes down. There's a company is Dallas TX called Micro Information Concepts that specializes in microbooks for the survival-minded, and they have a beauty little reader that uses sunlight as the light source. Information at area code 208 doesn't have any information on that name. Operator pronounced it KOOT-en-EE, with most stress on first syllable, and secondary stress on last syllable. [review by Ken Seger, 26 Sep 1988, from Survivalism message board on Ken's Survivalist BBS] An excellent source for products, information, helpful advise and good prices on radio equipment and solar products is KOOTENAI RADIO & ENERGY SYSTEMS. He also offers a newsletter THE LIGHT SPECTRUM that is filled with good info on those two subjects which is $18.00 per year. If you are a LIVE FREE member you get 10% off of the price of the newsletter and 5% off on some radio and solar items. I have purchased equipment from him and been most satisfied. When I ordered from him I was unaware of his LIVE FREE members discount (DRAT!) so he had no way of knowing that I was anything other than just a average patron. This is a one-man operation and located in the middle of NOWHERE. It takes 5 days for letters to get from here to there! He ships via UPS which means that if he can not direct ship from the manufacture (which I like) it might take over a week to get items that he stocks and almost 3 weeks for items that he orders and re-ships. Orders take priority, so be patient on letters of inquiry. American Body Armor 135 N. New York Ave. Halesite, NY 11743 Sells body armor/ballistic vests. Point Blank Body Armor 784 Merrick Rd. Perfect for cutting army greenline, and small general purpose chores. Leatherman tool. The ultimate gadget knife. I have heard good things about the SOG and the Gerber, but Gerber lost me with all the funky little screw driver bits. Randall Model-1 7". This is my "combat" knife. This is what I carry to the field. I don't agree with the "Expensive = Useless" theory. I paid $250 bucks for this knife and I have used a lot. Knives are special purpose tools. If you need to pound tent stakes get a hammer, if you need to chop wood get an axe, if you need to clear brush get a machette. In a pinch you can use a knife for these tasks, but I wouldn't make a habit out of it. - John From wiggley@primus.paranoia.com Mon Sep 19 19:18:50 EDT 1994 Article: 395 of misc.survivalism Path: bigblue.oit.unc.edu!concert!news-feed-1.peachnet.edu!umn.edu!zip.eecs.umich.edu!yeshua.marcam.com!charnel.ecst.csuchico.edu!olivea!uunet!freeside.fc.net!primus.paranoia.com!wiggley From: wiggley@primus.paranoia.com (Uncle Wiggley) Newsgroups: misc.survivalism Subject: Survival Books & Periodicals (list) Date: 19 Sep 1994 05:24:37 GMT Organization: Austin NetAbuse Incorporated Lines: 371 Message-ID: <35j7al$r1b@freeside.fc.net> NNTP-Posting-Host: primus.paranoia.com Keywords: Survival Books and Periodicals X-Newsreader: TIN [version 1.2 PL2] Here's a start on a list of books and periodicals ..... - Uncle Wiggley ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stackpole Books P.O. Harrisburg, PA 17105 717-234-5041 800-732-3669 (800-READ-NOW) FAX: 717-234-1359 Established in the early 1930s as "Stackpole Sons", the company that is today STACKPOLE BOOKS began as a small, family-owned publishing house. In the early years Stackpole Sons published a handful of books a year by a diverse and fascinating list of authors including Benny Goodman, Huey Long, Charles Goren, and Gifford Pinchot. The acquisition of The Military Service Publishing Company in 1935 brought a strong tradition of army history and military reference guides to Stackpole, a tradition that continues. Stackpole currently launches more than 50 new titles a year in the areas of crafts, outdoor sports, nature, history, and adventure and continues as a family-owned house, zealously guarding its reputation for quality publishing while seeking to preserve its healthy growth of recent years. The table of contents lists the following sections: New Titles, Nature, Outdoors, Crafts, Gardening & Cooking, Painting & General Interest, Carving, Woodworking, Osprey (a series of military history books), Military History, Sporting Literature, Fishing, Hunting, Guns (including Gunsmithing), Military Reference. In the Outdoors section, they even have a listing for a game called "Outdoor Survival: A Game about Wilderness Skills". Sounds interesting. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Horizon Utah (also known as Horizon Pubs. and Distributors, Inc.) P.O. Box 490, 50 S. 500 W. The kinds of books and videos that they sell are in some ways similar to those sold by Loompanics Unlimited. Their catalog is smaller, and it seems that since my catalog says "Vol. 22, No. 3" that they update it frequently. Here is the list of section titles in their catalog: Revenge & Humor, New ID & Personal Freedom, Espionage & Investigation, Explosives & Demolitions, Weapons, Military Science, Ninjutsu, Special Forces, Survival, Martial Arts, Action Careers, Sniping, Knives & Knife Fighting, Locksmithing, Self-Defense, Police Science, Terrorism, Silencers ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Loompanics Unlimited Box 1197 Port Townsend, WA 98368 Their 250 page catalog is available for $5. Get it. It can be very entertaining to read and browse (it can also be offensive, depending on your beliefs). On the catalog, they claim that they are "Sellers of Unusual Books", and I would have to agree that many of their books are highly unusual. I don't agree with some of the statements in their introduction (especially the one about "we do not believe in limits. We do not believe in laws, rules, or regulations."), but they do have some good books, and some bad ones. Following is the introduction and table of contents from their catalog: Welcome to the Loompanics Unlimited Book Catalog -- The Best Book Catalog in the World. This catalog is an important source for anarchists, survivalists, iconoclasts, self-liberators, mercenaries, investigators, drop-outs, researchers, and just about anyone interested in the strange, the useful, the arcane, the oddball, the unusual, the unique, and the diabolical. Herein you will find controversial and unusual books on a wide variety of subjects. Most of these books cannot be found in even the largest libraries. The majority of them will never be seen in bookstores. They are here now -- available to you... So controversial are the books we offer that most magazines will not allow us to advertise. Most bookstores and distributors refuse to carry our titles. Most periodicals refuse to review our books, or mention our existence. That's OK with us. We know where we belong: we are the lunatic fringe of the libertarian movement. Because we do not believe in limits. We do not believe in laws, rules, or regulations. We have contempt for censorship, secrecy and dogmatism. We don't give a damn about being "respectable," or Politically Correct. We don't care about anything except having fun and your right to find out anything you want to know. Nothing is sacred to us, not even skepticism and self-reliance. Here is a listing of subjects you will find covered in this amazing Catalog. THE UNDERGROUND ECONOMY. The booming tax-free "Off The Books" economy -- and how you can profit from it. (Pages 1 thru 8) MONEY-MAKING OPPORTUNITIES. If you're so smart, why aren't you rich? (Pages 9 thru 19) PRIVACY AND HIDING THINGS. We all have something to hide, don't we? The world's finest books on stashing your contraband and valuables, and attaining and keeping privacy. (Pages 20 thru 29) FAKE I.D. We are very proud of this amazing section. It contains the most comprehensive and excellent selection of books on I.D., fake I.D. and related subjects ever offered for sale. (Pages 30 thru 39) BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU. 1984 has come and gone, but Big Brother is still watching you. (Pages 40 thru 47) CONDUCTING INVESTIGATIONS. Professional and effective techniques and methods for gathering information and intelligence -- now revealed for you to use! (Pages 48 thru 56) CRIME AND POLICE SCIENCE. For cops and robbers everywhere. (Pages 57 thru 68) LOCKS AND LOCKSMITHING. The most complete collections of books on locks, lock picking, and lock bypassing ever offered. These books will open many doors for you... (Pages 69 thru 74) SELF DEFENSE. Protect yourself, your property, and your loved ones. What good is the "right" to self defense without the knowledge? (Pages 75 thru 80) REVENGE. How to kick ass and take names. Don't get mad -- get even! (Pages 81 thru 85) GUNS. Guns are even more American than Mom and apple pie. Come on, American: show us your guns! (Pages 86 thru 96) WEAPONS. "The right to buy weapons is the right to be free." (The Weapon Shops if Isher, A. E. Van Vogt) (Pages 97 thru 105) BOMBS AND EXPLOSIVES. Things that go Boom! in the night (and day). (Pages 106 thru 109) GUERRILA WARFARE. Will it happen here? It has in many (most?) other countries... (Pages 110 thru 114) MURDER AND TORTURE. Little discussed areas of the political arts. (Pages 115 thru 132) SURVIVAL. Survive and prosper in the coming "interesting" times. (Pages 133 thru 136) SELF-SUFFICIENCY. Taking care of yourself -- without government "help". (Pages 137 thru 141) HEAD FOR THE HILLS. Dropping out, retreating, uninhabited islands, nomadic living, and more. (Pages 142 thru 158) GIMME SHELTER. Real housing for real people. (Pages 149 thru 158) HEALTH AND LIFE EXTENSION. How to live longer and better. Did somebody say something about death and taxes? (Pages 159 thru 161) PARALEGAL SKILLS. Free yourself from the Legal Guild. (Pages 162 thru 164) SEX. Sex is great! Sex is good! Yea, sex!!! (Pages 165 thru 171) DRUGS. The real dope on dope! (Pages 172 thru 180) ROCK 'N' ROLL. Man does not live by bread alone... (Pages 181 thru 191) INTELLIGENCE INCREASE. If you're so rich, why aren't you smart? (Pages 192 thru 202) SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. Visionary science for the future... and now. (Pages 203 thru 206) HERESY/WEIRD IDEAS. Kicking around some sacred chaos... (Pages 207 thru 223) ANARCHISM AND EGOISM. Forbidden philosophies for far-out people... (Pages 224 thru 232) MASS MEDIA. The blow-dried "reality" of TV, magazines, newspapers, movies, etc... (Pages 233 thru 240) REALITY CREATION. Make your own world. Make the world you want by doing what you want. (Pages 241 thru 243) SELF-PUBLISHING. The "press" is "free" only if you own one! (Pages 244 thru 247) MISCELLANEOUS. Stuff that didn't quite fit in any of the other sections. (Pages 248 thru 254) This catalog is for knowledge. It is for joy and pleasure. It is for the unlimited potential of each individual -- for the undying spirit of human freedom and resistance to tyranny. Do not let anyone tell you what to think or feel -- decide for yourself! We hope you enjoy our books and catalogs as much as we enjoy putting them together. If you know of any good books which are not currently in our catalog, please tell us about them. Preparedness Products 1880 South Redwood Road Salt Lake City, UT 84104 801-972-9464 [above information last validated in May 1992] Suppliers of food that is prepared for storage, either by special packing, freeze drying, or dehydration, in bulk. Kootenai Radio & Energy Systems (KRES) Box 215-Ds Kootenai, ID 83840 The company publishes a newsletter on survival, communications, and energy independence called THE LIGHT SPECTRUM. See also the periodical "The Light Spectrum". [results of attempted contact by Andy Fingerhut in June 1992] Area code of Kootenai, ID is 208. Good book. Good suggestion. As for "yech", well, almost *anything* tastes horrible if eaten raw as a single ingrediant. I've always believed that people who claim "I really hate _____(fill in blank) must have taken a bite right out of the box, or whatever, not eaten a well prepared dish. So proper preperation and the ingrediants needed are the answer. One BIG PROBLEM with most of the "edible wilde" books I've seen is the featured plants are usually prepared into a pseudo-gormet dish. Euell Gibbons' "Candied Violet Blossems" springs to mind. There are too many others. Such techniques usually call for much sugar, butter, a full kitchen to prepare, etc. You won't be enjoying such fare out in the bush. One solution: Build up a repertoire of dishes using easy cooking techniques, local wild plants, and condensed or easily stored and carried ingredients. Hint: Look more to the way various native peoples would cook. Asian cooking--thai, for instance--uses stir-fry techniques and various curries and concentrated soup bases, which along with a few ingrediants such as dried shrimp, have a shelf-life of a couple of years. Garlic, chile peppers....yeah! Of course you must enjoy this sort of food to begin with. But if you do, those greens and small animals can be used to prepare a feast you'll "thrive upon". Try the "Tuong Ot Toi" Vietnamese chile-garlic sauce sold in small plastic jars with a green plastic lid and a dragon on the front. Seriously, it's a good course, and you'll learn about C-spine stuff as well as wound care, patient assessment, etc. LOTS of hands on training, including several realistic scenarios. --- Robert Allen, rja@sun.com DISCLAIMER: The views expressed in this posting are mine, and do not necessarily reflect the views of my employer.
