Update: less than a day after I posted this item, James Parker offered his help. Thanks, James!
I got mail from a gentleman who is facing a problem that I’m afraid may be far too common in the future:
I inherited after my father’s death, a collection of his compositions in the form of midi files. They were produced using a very old version of Mark of the Unicorn’s Performer software (ver. 1. something) running on an original 512 k (Fat) Macintosh (circa. 1985). The Mac is long since gone and I have been trying to resurrect the work my father left. None of my current software can read the midi files. Mark of the Unicorn have never answered my inquiries and a number of years have passed with no progress.
It’s very probable that in the future, a lot of good music will exist only as files in a proprietary format. And when the platform, or software, or operating system, or keydisk, or any number of other things disappears, so does the means of accessing that music.
I hope there’s someone out there who runs Performer (or something else that can read these files) who can help him out. If you can help, please contact me and I’ll his email address on to you.
