“I am Sitting in a Room” and others

The setting: a small room. Two tape recorders. Alvin Lucier records a short text on one, plays it back over the speakers … and records that. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat …Each generation has less voice and more of the room’s resonance: the voice slowly becomes dissolves into hisses, howls, and metallic gonglike noises. The only recording of this piece is unfortunately now out of print. Luckily for us, UBUWEB has preserved it in MP3 format, and you can download yourself your own copy.Exploration of the site highly recommended – you can even find Luigi Russolo’s original wack-job essay on The Art of Noise there, along with a slew of other interesting items. I plan to snag the Laurie Andersonrarities there as well.p.s. – the Alvin Lucier website mentioned above also has a recording of Music for Piano with One or More Snare Drums, which I find quite beautiful. Subtle, very subtle.
