Other lists to consider

Like many, I still like mailing lists for getting a real exchange of ideas, or for at least getting to watch the exchange go by. EMUSIC-L was unique in its time in having a large number of music theorists and academics along with any number of different orientations toward “popular” electronic music.

I haven’t found any such list currently in existence; greater access has led to greater fragmentation – but there are a number of lists which I currently (mostly) lurk on and enjoy. Most of these are hosted on Yahoo! Groups (I’m sure that there are others on Google Groups as well; I haven’t explored that venue as much). I haven’t included here the lists that either generate very little traffic, or which tend to be “all ads” and light on content.

beyond_em
is oriented mostly toward performers; tastes tend to run toward Berlin School, but anyone who does interesting and tasteful music will often be discussed. Has a lot of actual performers onboard, so there is a lot to be learned about live performances, and you will also often see performances reviewed. No prohibition against posting gigs – if you’ve been a member and have contributed to discussions.

SynthSights
is a list I’ve just lately joined; it has a flavor that reminds me more of EMUSIC-L. Gig spam/CD spam/etc. frowned upon; thoughtful discussions of performance, gear, philosophy.

vfx
Yes, I still have my VFXsd. Yes, I bought an SD-1 too. Very focused on specific problems/solutions for the VFX and its siblings. Very few TS-1 users, interestingly enough.
