I'm presently doing a senior research project around this technique, and was wondering who else might be working along the same lines. Granular synthesis has a big gain over Fourier analysis/synthesis in that instead of synthesizing sine waves of theoretically infinite length in the time domain, one takes short, ~20msec "grains" and adds them together. The grains can consist of simple sine waves, FM'ed waves, or digital samples, any of which are modulated by an envelope 20msec long. There have been a number of interesting articles published in "Computer Music Journal" on the subject, describing both the theory and applications of this method. The following is the Abstract from "The Analysis and Resynthesis of Tones via Spectral Interpolation" by Marie-Helen Serra, Dean Rubine, and Roger B. Dannenberg, 1988 ICMC Proceedings, pp322-332: "This paper presents a new approach to the real-time generation of digital sounds. Our approach is based on the interpolation of spectra over time, and leads to a completely automated analysis/synthesis algorithm for the reproduction of natural sounds. The technique enables accurate reproduction of the spectral variations of acoustic instruments. Furthermore, spectral interpolation synthesis has a more efficient implementation than that of classical additive synthesis. "We have applied the spectral interpolation analysis/synthesis technique to different instruments and have obtained promising results. The technique greatly reduces the amount of data needed to represent a harmonic sound; however, it fails to convincingly reproduce inharmonic sounds. To reproduce sounds with inharmonic attacks, we use a hybrid method which combines sampling and spectral interpolation synthesis." >From the Conclusions section (p331): "We are currently studying an extension of this technique in which sequences of spectra are obtained not from a specific tone being reproduced, but by sampling an arbitrary trajectory in a precomputed spectral space."
