Bastille Day is July 14, I think. What I wouldn't do to be there! Eeek! Sorry. (ahem) What I meant to say was, has anyone ever attended one of his concerts? (Houston or Docklands or whatever) I am curious about what effect the music has live, if you could tell how much was presequenced and what was live, etc... I am a pretty big fan (although I still haven't bought the Houston Lyons concert album) ctan (Cecilia) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jun 89 20:01:03 BST From: "Patrick C.K.Tsang" Subject: Jarre's Dockland concert For the Docklands concert they used two 24-track tape recorders in sync with Mc-500 sequencers. I have the full details of the setup --- not off hand though. He does have excuse for using tape recorders, because some of the ethic instruments cannot be done other ways. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jun 89 17:35:35 BST From: "Patrick C.K.Tsang" Subject: Performer Version 4. Dear Eric, Is it really out ? I thought Version 3 is more like it. I know that work on Version 4 has been started to check Opcode's Vision, but I don't know it has been released this quick. This is important to me as I don't want to send off my $115 for Version 3 if Version 4 is already out. Patrick. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jun 89 16:33:27 EDT From: Cecilia Tan Subject: Performer 2.41 The latest version of Performer to be released is 2.41. We got it at the lab a few months ago. Basic differences from 2.31 seem to be it doesn't crash as much, and it has a few new bells and whistles like a "monitor" type feature for each track so that when you are looking at the notelist, you can "play" the notes by selscting them. I find it a very useful feature since I tend to do a fair amount of note-by-note editing (because my playing skill is inconsistent) -ctan (Cecilia) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jun 89 18:01:52 BST From: "Patrick C.K.Tsang" Subject: Opcode's 'Vision' sequencer Dear Dan, >- What are opinions on the best software for the Mac. Simplicity is > NOT a criteria, but flexibility is. As Eric pointed out, the best software are MOTU performer and Opcode Vision. It depends on what kind of music you are making. I would like to have both myself because from time to time a 'pattern' based sequencer like the 'Vision' comes in handy. In a 'pattern' based sequencer, a complete song can be constructed segments of the song: say an intro, a verse, a chorus and a middle eight. You can record each segment separately, and finally arrange them into the song, like: intro, verse *2, chorus, middle eight, chorus, , etc. These kind of sequencers are very good for 'pop' music because you can construct a song with repeated segments without actually playing the whole song from top to bottom. In the 'Vision' sequencer you can define one complete sequence to each of the 'A'-'Z' keys on the Mac keyboard and run the sequence instantly with the touch of a button. These sequences can be further arranged into songs. Yamaha's MCS-2 (Nick got there first) was originally designed to sit on top of their 'Clavinova' range of Electric Pianos to turn them into MIDI Master keyboards. >intelligent ways. One question to you other MOTU/Jambox users (hey, >Patrick!): what are we going to do/recommend now that Southworth is >out of business? I use a Jambox clone called the 'Chaselock' which is superior to the original 'Jambox' and it is still in production. It has hard-wired switches for SMPTE/MIDI clock. Put Performer into direct-time-lock and you can switch the interface manually to receive MIDI clock or SMPTE clock. I find this easier when my studio is in spagetti's because I can look at it and know what I am locked to. It's about $300. >this, of course... Performer understands MIDI song pointer, so that >should be OK for the average MIDI sync box; but, that takes tempo >control out of Performer's hands, which is a shame. I don't recall how >it locks to real-time and SMPTE, although it can... Only when in MIDI clock mode. In SMPTE Performer provides you with a film-score sheet which allow you to start/stop and change tempo a sequence within the time-frame. I once taped a short bit of television but routed SMPTE onto the sound channel of my video-recorder, then put on some music afterwards with the picture in sync with Performer. It's so much fun ... try it, Eric. (Shame I lost the dialogue, didn't want to know what the programme is about anyway !) >Version 3, I believe. I've paid my clams already. Anybody interested >in a review when it arrives? Yes, please give a review. Can you give more detail ? The rack-patching seems useful but how many Prog.change will it send out ? And where can I get one ? There's one pictured in the June '89 issue of keyboard magazine p.139 I lied to you, it's has a 4 octave keyboard, that's what I get for not being careful. j. ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 5 Jun 89 20:45:55 BST From: "Patrick C.K.Tsang" Subject: Banana Music Can anybody please give me the address and telephone number of Banana Music, CA ? I'm glad so many of you have thought about the MIDI standard. I think it was Nick Rothwell who mentioned he wishes there were more than 16 channels. Changing this would not be a matter of changing hardware, but rather of software. The MIDI channel is assigned to an event by the con-figuration of 1's and 0's. Since they only allowed for four digits in the code to stand for the channel, you can only get 16 channels. I don't know what it would take to change this, but it would mean a change in the standard itself, in the MIDI language, I think, and that's probably more difficult to achieve than a hardware "upgrade." -cecilia ---------------------- End of EMUSIC-L Digest **********************
