The instrument features a mouse-driven user interface, value maps, trills, chords, and an "automatic" accompaniment system. Thibault is currently on leave from Cal State Hayward where he teaches computer science. Thursday / February 13 / 7:30 PM / Manfred Clynes "The Microstructure of Music" Professor Manfred Clynes will talk about the principles of microstructure in music and demonstrate how they breathe life into the otherwise dead notes of a musical score. His presentation will include prepared examples from the classical repertoire. Professor Clynes is currently a scholar at CNMAT, U.C. Berkeley's computer music research facility. Thursday / February 20 / 7:30 PM / Erling Wold "Musical Moments & Compositional Practices" Erling Wold discusses his use of rational microtonality, irrational rhythms, harmonic simplicity, mathematical algorithms and the fundamental mysteries of music. The talk will be illustrated with live and taped performances, and examples of Mr. Wold's work with dance and film. Thursday / February 27 / 7:30 PM / Rich Gold "Electronic Toys and their KCI (Kid-Computer-Interfaces)" Rich Gold will present examples of toys such as the PowerGlove, Captain Power, the Electronic Wheel of Fortune and Baby Heather that he helped develop while a researcher at Mattel Toys. Such toys provide a very different paradigm than the prevailing Desktop Metaphor for interacting with computers. Mr. Gold is currently a Researcher at Xerox Parc. Wednesday / March 4 / 7:30 PM / Scot Gresham-Lancaster and Mark Trayle "Composers-in-Residence" A mini-concert of works developed at Mills by two Composers-in-Residence at CCM this academic year. Gresham-Lancaster performs pieces with The Hub, a computer network band, using Opcode's "Studio V" which enables all participants to influence each other electronically during the performance. Mark Trayle premieres a new work for solo bugle and electronic ensemble called "Il Messagero" which features interactive ornamentation and live score generation. Thursday / April 2 / 7:30 PM / The DSP Project - A Lecture/Concert Members of the Mills Digital Signal Processing community will describe and demonstrate the latest results of their experiments in 56000 based real-time software synthesis. Topics include: vocoders, intonation, and granular synthesis. Participants include Phil Burk, Jeanne Parsons, Robert Marsanyi, and others. All events are held in the Ensemble Room of the Music Building. They are FREE and open to the public, and are sponsored by the Mills College Music Department and the Center for Contemporary Music, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. McMahon" Subject: EMUSIC-L Rules & Regs This is the semi-regular "rules and regulations" post. Just a quick outline of the canons of behavior that have evolved over the years of EMUSIC-L's existence. The basic thrust of EMUSIC-L is to provide a forum for the discussion of music made by electronic means. The actual means is secondary. What we are concerned with is the music, composing, and related topics. Therefore: 1) Ads are strictly not allowed by BITNet rules. No ads. None. Nada. Advising someone as to whether they are getting ripped off *if they ask the list* is permissible; otherwise, use private mail. Requests for addresses of mail-order firms, etc. are OK. Cutting deals on your own personal equipment is not OK. If you must, do it privately, or subscribe to SYNTH-L, where you'll reach a more responsive audience. Prices really aren't so much of interest unless either the entire world (literally) should know about this great deal, or you have inside information on a new product or upgrade. 2) Discussions as to the relative merits of hardware/software/etc. are permissible, as long as the reviewers state evidence supporting their opinions. Ad hominem attacks will not be tolerated. Arguments based solely on personal taste are not acceptable. It is preferable to request private mailings, which you can summarize and post back to the list. Reviews are useful. Mutual admiration societies are not. 3) Beginners *will* be treated with kindness and respect. There is no such thing as a dumb question on this list. If you can answer, answer, and be nice about it. Otherwise, say nothing. 4) EMUSIC-L is meant to be for the discussion of electronic music, in the studio, the classroom, in performance, and on recordings, including techniques, resources, user reviews and experiences, and speculation on futures. Some divagations will be tolerated; however, the list owner (me) maintains final say as to the subject matter on the list and will move to terminate off-topic, pointless, and (especially) rancorous discussions. 5) Usenet access to the list poses a problem. There is only a single path to the list from multiple Usenet users. If a particular user on Usenet causes trouble, the only way to remove this person is to close Usenet access. It behooves all Usenet users to make sure that these guidelines are followed. If Usenet access is closed, you will still be able to read the list via netnews, but you will have to post by mailing to EMUSIC-L@AUVM.BITNET. This would be inconvenient for everyone, and we'd like to avoid it. 6) Please refrain from adding to the noise level by commenting about accidental private posts to the list or the accidental sendings of SUBSCRIBE requests or suchlike to the list. That's my job. If you must pour out your wounded feelings ;-), either to me or to the offender, use private mail. 7) The listowner (namely me) is permitted to be as arbitrary as he or she pleases. I've never had to take action against a member of the list for breaking these rules, even when they hadn't been stated. I will notify offenders via private mail and I will wait for a response. But I don't have time to play Politeness and Germaneness Monitor. I will cut feeds and remove users from the list only if I must. But be assured that I will to preserve the quality of discussion on this list. If you have problems with any of this, talk to me privately. Now, let's get back to e-music! --- Joe M. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Feb 1992 12:30:50 +0000 From: Nick Rothwell Subject: I've set up a mailing list for Opcode MAX Subject line says it all. I have a new mailing list for developers and users of the MAX graphical development system. If you don't know what MAX is, I suggest you dig out the review by Carter Scholz in KEYBOARD magazine a year or so ago; it was also covered in SOUND ON SOUND (UK) and, I think, ELECTRONIC MUSICIAN in August '91 (so I hear). If you don't know what MAX is and you're lazy: MAX is a software system for the Macintosh which lets you graphically construct realtime processing systems for MIDI. It can talk to Opcode's OMS, MIDI Manager, the serial ports, DSP's, and you can build graphical user interfaces, draw tables and histograms, you name it. Applications range from SysEx message manipulators to dedicated synth editors to composition systems to MIDI message and controller mapping to live performance/improvisation tools to ... well, anything really. If you want to join the list, mail max-request@dcs.ed.ac.uk. The list address itself is max@dcs.ed.ac.uk. Please also note the MAX subgroup of Netjam, which serves basically the same purpose, with an emphasis on distributing actual work. Netjam itself is devoted to assisting in artistic collaboration and the distribution of the results, using several formats (such as MAX patchers and MIDI data). To join the list, email netjam-request@xcf.berkeley.edu, with the subject line "add me:max". For more information about it and Netjam in general, email the same address with the subject line "request for info". Netjam also distrubutes a monthly frequently-asked questions (FAQ) sheet, posted to the USENET newsgroups comp.music, rec.music.makers, and rec.music.synth. The sheet is also available via 'ftp' in whole and in parts in anonymous@xcf.berkeley.edu:misc/netjam/doc/FAQ/. Also available at that site is the entire Netjam archive, including several original MIDI compositions, sample data, and some useful MAX patchers. Ah. OK. I knew about NetJam, but I was never personally interested in the transfer of musical material. MAX patchers is different. If there's a MAX sub-group there, I'll join and see what's going on. I don't see any reason why there shouldn't be a MAX mailing list as well; I'd like to see the list be more conversational with discussion of ideas, concepts, projects, programming styles and the like; but it all depends on the direction its subscribers take it in. Anyway, I hope the two can be seen as complementary rather than competitive. Nick. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Feb 1992 00:29:47 -0500 From: Saturn%Knox.Bitnet@UICVM.UIC.EDU Subject: join the Sun Ra mailing list!!!! Greetings, Well, as you might tell by the address from which this message originates, I'm finally starting a Sun Ra mailing list! Topics for discusion will include: o Sun Ra's music, albums, videos, poetry, and philosophy. All things Ra! o Magazine and newspaper articles or books which talk about Sun Ra and/or contain interviews are also game. o Members of the Arkestra and album projects with which they have been envolved. o Other artists who are similar to Sun Ra, or who claim Sun Ra as an influence. o Free Jazz in general, and other types of Jazz as they relate to Sun Ra's music. For those of you who may not know: Sun Ra is a jazz musician who leads a big band and claims to be from the planet Saturn. He has been doing such for the past 35-40 years and is nearing 80 years of age. He is also a poet, and even a spiritual leader in some sense. He has well over 100 albums to his credit (with a little over a dozen on CD) and I hope to maintain a discography of Sun Ra recordings. Perhaps a list of magazine and newspaper articles and books dealing with Ra can also be developed. This is not a "listserv" type list, so I will be running it by hand. All administrative type e-mail should be send to as well as submitions for the list. I hope to get a Sun Ra digest out every other day or every third day as needed. If you know of any other Sun Ra fans who have electronic mail capabilities, please feel free to forward this message on to them. To subscribe to the Sun Ra mailing list, just send a note to me at this account: . (call up your favorite patch of violin playing a pitiful tune...) Cecilia is also looking for those interested in taking the torch and compiling MF III. She describes the job as "fun, just somewhat time-consuming..." As I may be able to attend, could I coax you into reposting >that announcement, perhaps with some times as well as date & place? Sorry about this, but that one's off. The Traverse Theatre is about to move (to a very impressive totally custom-built and hi-tech subterranean new site) so they aren't doing any "support" acts until after that's done. So, what I've done is taken this project and a couple of others and I'm putting together a full-length performance (three separate contemporary dance pieces, me doing the music live) in the Edinburgh Spring Fling arts festival at the beginning of June. That's been accepted and is slated to go ahead at the Assembly Rooms on June 4th. This is why I'm eating, sleeping and dreaming MAX at the moment... If you're in the area in March, Brian, please do give me a call (031 650 5142 or 031 225 9035) so we can meet up.
