I am pretty far into the project and am finding the Markers feature of Performer cumbersome. Is there a way to copy markers from one sequence or chunk to another. I made a listing of all the video edits, with SMPTE times, and would like to enter them in Performer as Markers once then copy the appropriate markers to the chunks where they are used. This does not seem possible. It is possible to copy markers from chunks to a Song but not from a Song to a Chunk or from a chunk to a chunk. Why not? If you know of a solution please let me know. Thank you, Neil Leonard nleonard@ecn.mass.edu ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Apr 1992 10:31:54 BST From: nick@DCS.EDINBURGH.AC.UK Subject: Performer and Markers Is there a way to copy markers from one sequence or chunk to another. I won't swear to this, but I *think* you can just cut and paste on the conductor track. I tried that after I posted the message and found that it works. Performer seems to loose the SMPTE signal and go into play mode when I am trying to record. I have been working with one video tape and the SMPTE signal has seemed fine until yesterday. I find that when I cycle the power of my MIDI Time Piece 90% of the problem goes away: It seems like the MTP has its own inconsistencies. When I thin the controller data of my sequence, the problem also occurs less. I am beginning to wonder if the combination of the Mac Classic with MTP cannot keep up with 8 channels of MIDI controller data and SMPTE at the same time. Has anyone else experienced this type of problem? Thanks in advance for any help. Also, the MTP does have some foibles of its own... I have a IIsi with 5 MB RAM and hd....(no math coprocessor) and MTP still gives me fits, especially on startup. What v. of Performer are you working with? 3.61? It probably needs at least 2 MB of memory "assigned" to it. Do a command-I under multifinder and see what the memory assignment is. -73- Marshall Gilula mgilula@newssun.med.miami.edu ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1992 20:47:00 EST From: NLEONARD@RCNVMS.RCN.MASS.EDU Subject: Re: Performer/SMPTE problem I have performer 3.61 and a Classic with 4 megs. I can assign 3.5 megs to it if needed. How much ram would you recommend and have you had problems with performer switching from record to play or stop? Thanks alot for your suggestion. Have you found that the MTP gets more unreliable as MIDI traffic gets more dense? I have been switching the Performer transports only when the VCR is not playing. This seems to help things a bit. Is there any thing else I can try? Some MTP's seem to be rather unreliable; others seem fine. Mine is pretty rock solid. When I thin the controller data of my sequence, the problem also occurs less. I am beginning to wonder if the combination of the Mac Classic with MTP cannot keep up with 8 channels of MIDI controller data and SMPTE at the same time. I would consider running current versions of Performer on a Classic or Plus to be at best marginal performance-wise; I'm surprised you're getting on with it at all. Thought of upgrading the Classic to a Classic II? So, while I'm here, perhaps you can help *me* - what do I need to work with video? (Generic question, huh?) I'm going to be scoring a contemporary dance piece in a couple of months, and I expect I'll have a video of the finished work, sans sound or music. I presume I need a VCR which (i) has timecode ins and outs, and (ii) lets me record the audio track separately from the video (which I want to leave alone of course). Am I just after a "professional" VCR with a few extra connectors on the back? I have Performer and the MTP so that end of the business is fine. Startup of the MTP, or startup of the Mac? Under System 7.0, it seems that the Mac looks around at startup to see if it's connected to a network, and spits random data down the printer port. An MTP connected to the printer (as opposed to just the modem) port will get confused. I keep my MTP connected to just the modem port of my IIci, and the MTP gets confused whenever I restart the Mac. I've almost got myself conditioned >to turn off the MTP every time I crash the Mac, but I still blow it once >in a while... There is a similar problem using MTP with Vision (under OMS). When my Mac (IIsi) crashes, the MTP DA cable routing is "modified" in unhelpful ways . This usually requires turning off the MTP and resetting the routings in the DA. Startup of the MTP, or startup of the Mac? -------------------------------------- Nick, it's startup of the MTP, i.e. to get the MTP DA to see the interface. Right? I believe that you were/are having the same type of difficulties. Startup of the Mac, of course, is not affected. My MTP is connected to the modem serial port, and it is still doing all that foolishness. Now, when I get ready to open MTP DA, I turn off the MTP first, open the DA, go through a hassle with it by saying first (NO) and then asking it to TRY AGAIN, i.e. to contact the MTP again. Before I click the TRY AGAIN button, I then make sure to turn on the MTP, and {{{{it has never failed so far}}}}} voila! the Connection is noted by the MTP DA. -73- Marshall ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Apr 1992 11:43:47 BST From: nick@DCS.EDINBURGH.AC.UK Subject: Performer/SMPTE problem I've still not managed to get the PowerBook to talk reliably to the MTP. I've had it get in touch once or twice, but then just hit the STATUS button on the DA again and *poof* it gets a corrupted list of connections, filters and so on. Once more, *poof*, it's fine. If there is no other sound that you will be using from the video that is. I'm not sure if MTP is MIDI-SPMTE or not I don't use Mac. Re generate the Tim Timecode from the video on to a multitrack tape machine, your sequencer should lock to the timecode, again I use a different system so you check that. And then record as normal, the code on the multitrack should match the VCR, you ca can mix down to video in a facility that has *good* *broadcast* decks.
