If you have suggestion on which other list I can send it to, please let me know. Here is the problem I have : At Laval university campus (in Quebec city), the library is in one building and holds all the audio documents (CD, records, cassettes). The department of music is in another building about 1500 feet away from the library. The students do not like to walk back and forth every time they want to listen to a musical work. Specially when they have a break of only an hour between two courses, this does not give them much time for listening. Instead of moving the library, which for many reasons is not really feasible, somebody had the idea of transmitting the music from one building to another. In the music building, there would be a room with a few listening stations (5 to 10), then when a student want to listen to a work, he or she would call the library and say for example :" I would like to listen to Bruckner Symphony no. 7 on listening station no. 2". Somebody at the library would put the CD in a CD player and the student could listen to the symphony. This is a very nice scenario but how can it be done? I have two ideas, but I do not know how to implement them. 1. We have an ethernet network between the 2 buildings. The first idea is to transmit the information digitally. A system (computer) read the digital output of a CD player compress it and transmit it over ethernet. At the other end, the signal is received, decompressed and converted to sound. Do you know equipment and/or software that could do that? Do you know vendors? 2. The analog output of a few CD players are fed through an equipment that modulate the signals and send them over fiber optics (we have f. o. between the 2 buildings). At the other end, the signals are demodulated and send to each station. Once again, do you know equipments or vendors for this implementation? I am opened to other ideas too. Please answer to me directly, since I am not on the list. I will summarize later if there is enough interest. The interface is pretty difficult to delineate at times...i.e. where is it located.... It is good to know that 'sci.electronics' exists, but I think that a lot of programming, and otherwise high-tech information appropriately belongs in EMUSIC also.
