I cannot vouch for their newer kits, such as the ones you mention, but PAIA's older stuff is infamous for its low quality. Although the parts themselves were fine, many of the circuits were poorly designed and produced unsatisfactory results. I would be reluctant to buy anything from them. --Adam schabtac@stout.atd.ucar.edu ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 May 1992 17:07:37 -0400 From: Robert Doyle Subject: PAIA Eq?? has anyone any thoughts on the kits from PAIA? I am thinking of the mixers, MIDI>CV, and the EKx Mod Series. I am thinking of useing the modules as part of a class project in an intro to synthesis course. rdoyle@brock1p Bob Doyle ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 May 1992 00:57:34 EDT From: Eirmkur Hallgrmmsson 18-May-1992 0057 Subject: RE: PAIA Eq?? Terrible physical quality. Expect to pay more than the electronics are worth to repackage the unit into something that won't fall apart. Seriously. Along with the wrong info on the final substitute (pin outs!). ] That was my experiance with them. They folded for a while and now have restarted the business. Supposedly more professional. Perhaps I've just worked with different kits, but my experience has been quite different than other subscribers. I've built numerous Ekx kits for various applications and have always been satisfied. Not only were they easy to build and reliable, but they were also easy to modify. I've also nuilt their MIDI>CV interface. I'm not sure what the model is, but it is the one that can be expanded by adding additional cards. I'm very happy with this unit. Not only is it very versatile by itself, but if you desire you can write your own programs to control it. I've also been pleased with their tech support. You can call up and talk to someone during business hours. The assistance I've received has generally been quite good. Unfortunately this isn't a toll free call. One downside is that you will have to design, buy and build the packaging yourself. This can add significantly to the cost of your project. In addition, the audio quality isn't as good as what you could get from other units, but then again you aren't necessarily paying as much, and, as I said, it is quite easy to modify these. Anyway, they were adequate for what I needed. Hope this helps. Thanks. They seem fine for what I want to do. Re other suppliers of CEM chips I don't know, this is the only place I have seen them. If you find any other let me know, I'm going to have one of my classes next year build a mod system for our studio. rdoyle ------------------------------ End of the EMUSIC-L Digest ******************************
