The original ones are not that good. I've got a DX21. It can actually produce some decent, useful sounds, but you're not going to have too much luck creating patches to imitate "real" (acoustic or otherwise) instruments. My advice would be to use the ROM presets as a learning device. Make sure you understand the architecture of the DX21, then examine the parameters which constitute some of the presets. Pay particular attention to things that are not necessarily intuitive (to the non-DX programmer) like which algorithms are used for what classes of sounds, and what various op frequency ratios and output levels do. As you're checking out a patch, begin muting various operators to see how they affect the sound. Play with the feedback level on op4. If you're totally new to synth programming, make sure you understand how envelopes work... I'd start with an INIT VOICE patch, and create a 2 op patch (use, e.g. algorithm 1, and just leave the output levels of ops 3 and 4 at 0. It's handy to turn off unused ops while programming, too), then experiment with the envelopes for ops 1 and 2 (as well as freq ratios and output levels, etc.). Enjoy! -Patrick pgr@ramandu.ext.vt.edu ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Jul 1992 12:40:00 EDT From: RAY BROHINSKY Subject: Re: yamaha dx21 info wanted the dx21 is from the same family as the dx11 and dx100. I don't remember if the dx21 had touch sensitivity. If not, `real good piano' and `good strings' aren't likely. On the other hand, dx 4-op machines like the 21 are OK for `sounds a little like brass'. The rest gets hairy. I suggest that you fiddle with it. If you want some help with figuring out what the programming paradigm (fancy way to say how it does what it does) for it is, I'll be glad to help by private email. raybro ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Jul 1992 13:16:00 CET From: "CRI/CD/OS; Rene de Bie" Subject: yamaha dx21 info wanted HI. I am new in the world of synthesizers and midi. Recently I layed my hands on a YAMAHA DX21 synth. Now this instrument is programmable and i would like to know if someone has the settings for sounds like 'hammond organ' 'real good piano' 'good strings' or whatever sounds there are. The original ones are not that good. Maybe someone can help? I found out that with the right external effects it sounds pretty good! Rene. ------------------------------ End of the EMUSIC-L Digest ******************************
