I will, of course, lay out hard earned swag for the CD when it appears, but this might tide me over in the meanwhile. Feel quite free to say no, as well. Just a more or less idle request.... I suppose I could promise to air a portion of it. It might not be for a couple of weeks (Japanese house remix special this week, Paul Lansky interview next week, live free jazz gigs from Fred Frith/Hans Reichel and Peter Brotzmann/Gregg Bendian the week after), but hey. Let me talk it over with the gang first; we've been very stiff about restricting the distribution of the material before the CD comes out, and there's some question as to whether or not the 2nd session should EVER be made public. I'll contact you via private email when I decide, but my first response would be to refuse, with apologies for our lateness.... >I suppose I could promise to air a portion of it. It might not be for >a couple of weeks (Japanese house remix special this week, Paul Lansky >interview next week, live free jazz gigs from Fred Frith/Hans Reichel >and Peter Brotzmann/Gregg Bendian the week after), but hey. Tempting. I'll include the offer with the note to the Team. -- mike metlay | atomic city | "Just remember to rip out all the RAM chips p. o. box 81175 | and replace them with multistate core, pittsburgh pa 15217-0675 | for a more analog sound." metlay@netcom.com | (d. elliott) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1993 08:26:45 PST From: metlay Subject: On tape copies of the Team stuff Greg (and everyone else who might care): I've decided not to make any exceptions to the so-far standing rule that copies of the Team Metlay masters are not to be distributed to non-Team people. My feelings on the two projects are as follows: BANDWIDTH is going to be out on CD sometime between now and the next close approach of Halley's Comet. I'd rather not have "bootlegs" with different noise reduction, level control, EQ, and so on, circulating beforehand, especially not on the radio. BETA TEST/SATURNALIA is a DAT master sitting on my desk silently staring at me and daring me to do something with it. The members of the Team are strongly divided in their opinions of its quality and content. Being the kind of person who has a deep-seated psychological need to make everyone happy, I am in agony over what to do with it. If we wait for the next Team get-together to redo the tracks, it could be 1997 before the CD ever sees the light of day. On the other hand, a premature release of the existing material could do a lot of damage to our reputation if people decide that it *is* hasty and poorly done. Assuming that this quandary doesn't kill me from stress, I'll let people know what's happening with it when I figure it out myself. Argh. -- mike metlay | atomic city | "Just remember to rip out all the RAM chips p. o. box 81175 | and replace them with multistate core, pittsburgh pa 15217-0675 | for a more analog sound." metlay@netcom.com | (d. elliott) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1993 15:44:41 CST From: Gregory Taylor Subject: Re: On tape copies of the Team stuff Mike: thanks for the consideration (and this to you lot on the other side of the BANDWIDTH project), and I quite understand your decision to sit on the tapes until Heck freezes over, as is your right. To be quite frank, I was interested more in the second, slightly more..... ah, *failed* project that you're all uneasy about. That sounded more up my alley (to say nothing of my audience). If for some reason you *do* decide to send the thing out into the world, I'll certainly send you a DAT and all that. Oh, and as long as we're here - I've gotten quite a few notes from list readers about mentioning this radio program thing. Yes, I *am* the same poor bastard who put together the original net tape projects. No, I don't want to volunteer to do the next one - sorrrrrrrry. This radio program I was nattering on about is a project of some 6 years duration on the local Pacifica affiliate on Sunday prime (9-11 PM) which is *not* strictly an electronic music program. The geek vox that starts the thing calls it "A Sunday evening program of electronic/exper- imental/classical/ethnic/improvised conduct for the discerning listener late in the 20th century. Although I've got no particular problem with the kind of electronic music that those "Star Streams" folks play, this is NOT that kind of show. I've gotten a number of notes from folks who describe themselves as "tangerine dream" stuff who want airplay on New Age shows. I think it'd be really dishonest of me to represent myself on those terms, particularly because lots of you really care about what you do. On those situations when electronic music gets played, its often bounded on either side by Estonian Choirs and sweeps of the shortwave band. Your uncle Nick *has* been on the radio (the bit off the last net tape) as has been other net tape and net folks (even the redoubtable Mr. Rossi). I get lots of tapes (particularly from more academic computer music folks these days, since I actually *do* play the stuff. You think it's rare to hear synthesizers on the radio? Try Csound....), but not all of 'em get played. Dean Koonce did just 2 weeks ago. I've got D. Harrington slotted in on an upcoming one, and an all-woman computer music show slated for the kickoff of womyn's history month. I just didn't want to do anything to fan the rumour that there's a DJ out there doing a synthesizer show. Back in my serious cassette culture days in the early 80s, I remember vividly how tough it was to find outlets for my work - and I don't want to be the person disappointing anyone else in my dotage. Thanks. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1993 09:22:33 +0000 From: Nick Rothwell Subject: Re: On tape copies of the Team stuff >Your uncle Nick *has* been on the radio (the bit off the last >net tape) I have? Ooh...! I'm curious which piece/tape and what prompted you to consider it for airplay...
