Is there an anonymous ftp site that holds .mid (or Cakewalk .WRK) files besides ucsd.edu? I have heard something about the castrovalva site, but failed to get the ftp to work properly (couldnt even ls) If someone has lots of sites, better post to the lists, people with one or two better e-mail me and I will post the summarized list back to emusic-l and synth-l. (What directory path?) I spent about 20 minutes just looking for them. I might have just been tired or something, but I could not find them. I thought they would be somewhere in /pub, but had no luck. A path would be greatly appreciated. I haven't tried this myself so it's hearsay. Do I need special permission to access the pub/msdos/sound dir's ? Should I log on under a different account ? There is a directory /pub/culture/music that looks promising, though I haven't gone back to try it yet. You must have ignored the warning messages from the server. Yes, some ftp servers check what you have typed in as a password, and if it proves to be incoherent, they either disconnect you, or like nic.funet.fi does, switch you to an empty file tree, containing only the explanation of what you should do to obtain access to the whole archive. Yes, I hate that too. > You need to ftp to ftp.funet.fi not nic.funet.fi > Bill Winn "nslookup ftp.funet.fi" shows that ftp.funet.fi is an alias for nic.funet.fi. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Feb 1993 16:35:53 UTC+0100 From: gui Subject: Re: .MID files Well, I must say that just a pair of months ago I read a message regarding nic.funet.fi's new structure so, maybe the paths have changed since then. I haven't logged funet archives so I haven't checked it out.... If you want to get Standard MIDI Files, you can try sol.cs.ruu.nl -------> /pub/MIDI/SONGS nic.switch.ch -------> I don't remember the path, but look under /pub subdirectories...... Ok? Luis A. I haven't ftp'd to funet.fi for over 6 months and thus I don't know anything more than what most of you seem to already have uncovered. Sorry I couldn't be more specific. I just thought I'd mention it as I seemed to remember a resonably large collection there. I downloaded two zips from saffron.inset.com (e-m.zip and 1-d.zip) I tried to play them with Sequencer plus pro (on my SB pro card) but the drums looks awful. Can you help me ? I changed the drum channels to 16 and the programs to 126 (drum mode). It seems that the drums are mixed. In place of kick I hear cymbals and the like .Is there any way to transform them in a valid (for my card) midi format ? The whole thing is a drum map. As there's no standard drum map, you probably need a drum remapper. There's one called mapdrum in the public domain but I can't remember where I saw it...
