It's 16-multitimbral and 32-polyphonic, have decent realistic sounds and what I'm looking for: large capabilities to create synthetic sounds. I spent my week-end on it and, added to a multi-effects box (it has no good built-in effects), it gives very good results. Does anybody have the same box ? What do you think of it ? Do you know special problems, or special tricks to know ? Is there an editor for it under MSDOS available on an ftp site, or patches ? Let me know ? I'm considering the purchase of 21M floppy drive for my Mac, this way I would have large removable storage for both my sampler and computer. I also just saw an ad for Sony's Minidisk, which seems to be the same technology. If so, does anyone know what the sample rate and resolution of the unit is? They advertise 60 minutes of music, but with a 21M floppy, that must be rather lousy quality. Anyway, if it is the same technology, does anyone know of a SCSI version that would allow use as both a computer storage device and an audio recording source. That way, i could save my samples on it and also use it as a master for my work, instead of cassette. It is MOST DEFINATELY *NOT* the same technology! The Sony MD is a purely optical disk where Flopticals are magnetic disks with optical timing tracks. Flopticals use a sophisticated (I'm not sure if it is a laser or not) optical system to read pre-encoded timing information from the optical part of the disk, but the data is encoded in a magnetic form. MD is a purely optical system which uses a laser to heat the substrate and magnetic fields to change the polarity of the dye under the substrate to change its' optical properties. Consequently MiniDisk has a dramatically denser data capability than a floptical, even though their sizes are similar. MD was announced by Sony early last fall, and at that time a Sony spokesperson said "We only have plans for a walkman type device right now" and "...this technology would seem to be ideal for computer uses... we have no product plans of that type at this time." Local Best Buy stores have MDs on display- I've hard one and they sound great (As far as I could tell in a reletively noisy environment). I do know that the MiniDisk uses some sort of a proprietary compression scheme to fit the 70 mins. of music on the disk--- the same amount of time as a regular CD-- and consequently the data version will likely not have the same capacity as a CD-ROM. But then, minidisk is read/write so if its' only 300MB of capacity, I won't complain! I personally, think they will have a data device for sale by next fall. No. To replace them. Even more confusing... The impression I get is that a lot of computer vendors (and users) are keen to get started on 3.5" 128Mb optical discs, and if Sony turn round and replace the technology with MD, everyone is going to get *very* annoyed...
